Nope. No beach pictures, no sunsets, no 5* hotels, no colorful dishes or hot women in bathing-suits. I’m sorry. What we have on the menu today is just plain boring potatoes.

If the history records are correct people rebuked in planting potatoes, but Maria Theresa, who ruled the Habsburg dominions back then persisted. So potatoes we got, kept and even grown to love.

Slovenes have a strange attitude towards food. Reading some of our first books they all portrayed more or less the hard farm life and an obsession with food. My grandmother had 8 siblings, my grandfather had 7 (and this is just the mother’s side). So it makes sense … if you lived of the land and had so much mouths to feed … food was important.

How many times did I hear: "Good, potatoes are in, now all we need is beans and cabbage to make it and we’re fed for a year." Meat was sparse when my grandmother was a child. My father only eats white bread and can’t even stand to look at the bird bread (as he calls it). And I think this is a “gene” that carried on in a way. This obsession with food now blasted in full force though we are in a land of plenty now.

A Colorado potato beetle for apsu@apsu. <3

Though we have a lot of Italian, Hungarian and Serbian influence in our food preparations … the traditional Slovene dishes still stay heavy. The most common dish here is called the Sunday lunch … the name is old, since meat was usually served only on Sundays. It starts with clear beef soup, what follows is roasted potatoes with beef meat from the soup and usually ends with stewed fruit.

Though Slovenia is still very much into farming, newer and newer generations are letting it go. Self-sustaining is slowly drowning in the new (to some of you old) trends. Cooked potatoes and cabbage are slowly being replaced with mangos, avocados, sushi and whatever else that can be bought.

Sunday lunch became a meal of the poor and unimaginative.

I don’t mind.

Only beans and cabbage to go and I will be feed for a year.
