The house that builds itself
Technology has now got to a point where structures can build themselves.
Yes, you read that correctly. UK-based Ten Fold Engineering has developed a system where its houses self-unfold, giving the phrase ‘building automation’ a whole new meaning.
Forget months of delays and issues with contractors, this house can assemble itself in eight minutes. Eight minutes – that’s less than the average time it takes to have a shower.
The house travels on the back of a standard-sized lorry and at the touch of a button unfolds itself from a container to a fully equipped and powered up habitable space. No builders, cranes, or foundations required.
The structures are based on Ten Fold’s patented lever system technology, which enables different parts to move simultaneously as the building expands. Once set up, the building covers three times its transport size, the U-Box base unit is approximately 645 square feet unfolded.
What Ten Fold’s homes give their owners is unlimited flexibility. They are relocatable and can be run off-grid with various clean energy technologies, meaning they can be placed almost anywhere.
The structures are also highly adaptable – they can be upgraded and changed when the need arises, as well as stacked and connected to others. This means they can also be used as office, retail, or gallery spaces and can offer solutions for seasonal variations in demand or one-off major events.
The self-deploying houses will be available by the end of 2018.
