Hey there, I hope you're doing great and started the week off with lots of energy!!

This Monday I had a pretty interesting activity through my university. I’m studying physical therapy, and right now I’m taking a single course that covers disorders of the nervous system and intervention techniques. Over the past month, our professor organized us into groups to gain hands-on experience at a nursing home, where most of the residents have neurological conditions.

The place we visited is really nice—the seniors live comfortably there. We went to do recreational activities with them, and it was really enjoyable in that sense—sharing moments of joy and companionship. However, the experience also made me reflect deeply on the importance of taking care of our health, since it was very impactful for me to see for the first time how people behave after suffering from some kind of illness that now prevents them from being functional or independent, and who have issues with speech and dementia...

I clearly didn’t know the story of the elderly couple or exactly how many of them there were, but they made me realize the importance of always promoting a healthy lifestyle, because even though a neurological disease can be congenital or caused by an infection, the vast majority of cases can be prevented starting in youth through healthy habits. Living a life free of bad habits, exercising throughout one’s life, engaging in activities that promote neuroplasticity, and so on. Because, honestly, how difficult it must be—first, emotionally, to watch as you gradually lose functionality, and second, for the family to cope with that situation...

It has also allowed me to connect with a sense of gratitude—for everything, for being well, and because my loved ones are well too… always honor your life and your body, and never take anything for granted. Thank you so much for reading this far; I’m sending you a big hug🤍.
