You must have seen historic monuments and cafes of Delhi. But today let me take you through a hidden village in west of Delhi.
‘Kumhar Gram’ (Potter’s Village)
Easiest way to reach there is by Delhi Metro’s Blue line and from Uttam Nagar east metro station we can reach the village by rikshaws or we can walk to that place. You’ll know that you have reached by the essence of clay and stacks of earthen pots on the road sides.
We have found some amazing people there and one family of potters invited us inside their home to see the process of molding clay into pots.
I was told that the village was established by the potters from Alwar, Rajasthan who migrated to Delhi long back.
Now the important thing to know is that the whole village is an industry comprising of small units and those units are operated by different families. They are exporting their products to different adjoining states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana etc.
I want to share one experience when I was in Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) for my sister’s wedding, for that we needed a small earthen pot for some ritual, and I found this shop full of pots and other earthen products. I started talking to the owner of the shop and he shared that they bring everything from the Potter’s Colony in Delhi.
Potter’s Village is not your regular tourist attraction but I must tell you that you will find some of the most creative people there and it is a peaceful place.
