The accidental accusation. This was a very sad one that happened a year ago, the experience is still very fresh. Although, the degree of the accusation wasn’t much but I felt the pain deeply down to my bones.

It was my first day at my new place of work, I didn’t know how things were done and it’s environment. It was lunch hour, so I went out to look for a place to get snack and I found a shop very close to my working place. I was glad it wasn’t far, so I’ll get back to the office early. But little did I know that it was going to be Doom.

I got to the shop and met two other guys who were buying something too. The seller was an elderly woman, I told her what I wanted and gave her money before she brought the items out. She was a bit slow because she was aged and I was patient with her, waiting for my balance. I then discovered that there was no attempt of her bringing my balance, so I asked her for it. This was when the whole drama started. The next thing the woman said was "Do you want to steal my money?" I paused for a second, I didn’t know where that was coming from and then she repeated herself, this time she was shouting.

I was trying to explain to her that I have paid her already for the item and I even described how I did, then she called me a Thief! LOL. A thief for an item worth less than a thousand naira. The shop was beginning to get crowded and I was still trying to explain myself, I felt so unfortunate that day, she still insisted that I never paid her. I was in tears for such embarrassment, for one thousand naira? It’s was so painful.

What saved me that day was that I had two witnesses, they were the guys I met at the shop. They attested to the other people around that I gave the woman money and they were there when it all happened. The people believed them, apologized to me and said that’s what she usually do and it wasn’t her first time. I was so bitter, I wept, how could she? How could she have accused me wrongly, what If there was no witnesses? They would have labeled me a thief at my first day at work. Mehn...and I thought it would have been more complicated. And I was grateful for how I was justified by the witnesses.

I left the money for the woman and the already bought items at her shop because I was so angry and my appetite died.

I got to the office and told my boss what I experienced. He also apologized and told me I can’t do anything to her because she was aged and maybe having amnesia (a loss of memory). I understood that so well, but my mood for the entire day was so messed up. And that was the first and last day I stepped my foot into her shop. I took no actions because she was an elderly woman and the money doesn’t worth it, but I was so pained.

False accusations can destroy a life even if the accused is innocent. I tried to get back my mood by keeping myself distracted from thinking about the incident with work and music but it wasn’t working because It was so bad but I later overcame.
