[ENG/ESP] Crochet ball: A goal and a failure/Pelota a crochet: Un acierto y un fracaso.

A client asked me for a crochet ball for his son. He didn't give me any specifics, just that it would fit in his hand because he wanted it to hang in his school bag. At first it seemed like a no-brainer so I readily agreed. Let me tell you, however, how this little ball was the cause of one of my first major frustrations since I started crocheting.

Un cliente me pidió una pelota a crochet para su hijo. No me dió mayor especificación, solo que cupiera en su mano pues la quería para colgarla en su maleta para el colegio. De entrada me pareció algo súper fácil de modo que acepté a toda velocidad. Sin embargo, permítanme contarles, cómo esta pequeña pelota fue la causante de una de mis primeras y grandes frustraciones desde que tejo con ganchillo.

I started watching a lot of videos on how to make a soccer ball and I think that was my first failure, because I had in mind how to make it, but my ambition was stronger and it occurred to me that it would be a great opportunity to make a ball with only hexagonal patches. I chose a couple of skeins of black and green cotton yarn that were perfect for this project.

Empecé a mirar muchos vídeos de cómo hacer una pelota de fútbol y creo que ese fue mi primer fallo, pues tenía en mente cómo hacerla, pero mi ambición pudo más y se me ocurrió que sería una gran oportunidad para realizar una pelota con solo parches hexagonales. Escogí un par de madejas de hilo de algodón negra y verde que iban perfectas para este proyecto.

Of all the tutorials I watched, I found one on youtube from Amis'Mille that I found easy, as the instructor handles and explains it very well and I went for it with 12 black hexagons of 15 low stitches in the last round and 20 hexagons of 18 low stitches in her last round. This point caught my attention and I want to clarify that the hexagons are of different sizes, because the black ones are made on a magic ring of 5 low points and the green ones on a magic ring of 6 turns, the reason why they must be different I don't know, but it must be a geometric calculation.

De todos los tutoriales que vi, encontré uno en youtube de Amis´Mille que me pareció fácil, pues la instructora lo maneja y explica muy bien y me lancé a la aventura con 12 hexágonos negros de 15 puntos bajos en la última vuelta y 20 hexágonos de 18 puntos bajos en su última vuelta. Éste punto me llamó mucho la atención y quiero aclararles que los hexágonos son de tamaños diferentes, pues los negros son realizados sobre un anillo mágico de 5 puntos bajos y los verdes sobre un anillo mágico de 6 vueltas, la razón por la que debe ser diferentes la desconozco, pero debe ser un cálculo geométrico.

Once all the pieces are done, it's a matter of sewing them together but following the pattern so that everything fits perfectly. When I placed the first pieces, I was anxious and excited because it looked good.

Una vez realizadas todas las piezas, se trata de ir uniendo mediante una costura pero siguiendo el patrón para que todo cuadre perfectamente. Cuando coloqué las primeras piezas, me sentía ansiosa y emocionada porque se veía bien.

It was already late and it was about 1 am. It didn't matter, I kept going because I wanted to finish it, but at one point everything started to warp. I kept sewing pieces and I thought the pattern was fine, but as I went on it got worse and worse. It was like my cute soccer ball was turning into Frankenstein.

Ya había avanzado la hora y eran cerca de 1 de la madrugada. No importó, seguí porque quería terminarlo, pero en un punto todo empezó a deformarse. Seguí cosiendo piezas y a mi parecer el patrón estaba bien, pero en la medida que avanzaba se ponía peor. Era como que mi linda pelota de fútbol se convertía en Frankenstein.

I got to the end where there were no more pieces to fit, I had two pieces left over and no matter how hard I tried to place one in that strange hole that didn't look like a hexagon at all, I couldn't do it. It was 2:30 in the morning and I ended up with a strange thing in my hands. I turned off the light without even looking at the mess I had on the piece of furniture where I sit to knit. It was the most frustrating feeling so far, as I had totally underestimated this project. The next day I sent photos to my client, as I didn't want her to think that I hadn't worked on her order, but that I hadn't succeeded.

Llegué al final donde ya no entraban más piezas, me sobraron dos y por más que intenté colocar una en ese extraño agujero que para nada parecía un hexágono, no lo conseguí. Eran las 2:30 de la madrugada y yo terminé con una cosa extraña entre mis manos. Apagué la luz sin siquiera mirar el desorden que tenía sobre el mueble donde me siento a tejer. Fue la sensación más frustrante hasta el momento, pues había subestimado totalmente este proyecto. Al día siguiente envié fotos a mi cliente, pues no quería que llegara a pensara que no había trabajado en su pedido, sino que no lo había logrado.

Two days later, when I was feeling better about the defeat, I set out to make the ball again, but as I had originally planned. I started with a circumference of 54 low stitches in its diameter. I knitted only six hexagonal pieces of 15 low stitches in its last round and fixed them to the piece with pins, after I was sure of their position, I applied a liquid silicone stitch and with black thread I knitted a kind of net joining the hexagon ends.

Dos días después, cuando ya me sentía mejor por la derrota, me dispuse a realizar nuevamente la pelota, pero como la había planeado originalmente. Empecé con una circunferencia de 54 puntos bajos en su diámetro. Tejí solo seis piezas hexagonales de 15 puntos bajos en su última vuelta y las fijé a la pieza con alfileres, luego de estar segura de su posición, apliqué un punto de silicón líquido y con hilo negros fue tejiendo una especie de red uniendo las puntas de los hexágonos.
