La Rambla is a wide avenue running through historic Barcelona. In Roman times, this winding path leading to the sea was a creek outside the city walls. Barcelona would grow, and la Rambla was absorbed into the medieval city, becoming a wide street in the overcrowded urban fabric. It is now a lively thoroughfare mostly reserved for pedestrians, thronging with street vendors and restaurant tables.
