I have recalled how many times I was used and caught fun out of my illiterate village lifestyle. Yes, I was born and raised in the village and I also agree that the kind of life I was living in the past was out of my illiterate, and today I'm happy to have changed to be literate in modernization.
There was a time I went to visit my aunt in Portharcourt Rivers state. This happened immediately after I finished secondary school. My aunt has a very big modernized television connected to DStv. That day, the whole house was watching an interesting movie and the electricity went off and we were all unhappy. After a few hours, the light came back and we all gathered again to continue the movie. My aunt asked me to turn the television on. I thought the television was the type we used to watch in the village and went boldly to the television. Standing in front of the television, I nearly collapsed because the buttons to press the television were not there. I stood close to the television for minutes and everyone was just looking at me without help.
A small boy among us said to the hearing of everyone I don't want to believe that brother doesn't know how to turn the television on. As he said it, everyone laughed including me. After the whole laugh, I shouted to the boy that I had been standing close to the television looking for the remote to turn the TV on. A mature lady among us said but the television can be on without a remote. I became more confused. My aunt said to me, look at the remote.
When I collected the television remote, it was worse for me because the remote had no writing directions only the buttons. When all eyes were on me, I didn't know what to do because I knew I couldn't turn the television on. I began to pray for electricity to go off but that didn't happen.
I started to crack jokes for them to see if they'd laugh and collect the remote from me. Despite how long I cracked jokes for them, none of them laughed. Standing in front of the television, I was sweating from my head down. Before o could know it, I started hearing thief thief. Hearing the thief, everyone left the parlor. As everyone left, I dropped the remote and left the parlor to my room. Before I could know it, the smallest boy who was among us, came inside my room and told me to be thankful to God as he was the one who saved my life. In the end, the boy told me there was no thief in the house and that he was the one who came up with the whole idea after he noticed that I couldn't turn the television on. I later thanked the small boy for saving me not to be shamed.
