The problem today is not having too little information, it is having too much information in general, but being unable to assimilate enough good information on the truly important matters.

It is easy to get caught up and sidetracked by headlines and curiosities, and waste time and energy in useless pursuits.

Here are 10 steps to cope:

1 – Filter information - avoid everyday news noise and information which does not give you a benefit you can define

2 – Accept that you will never know 100% of the facts, so learn what you need and act

3 – Deal with the information that is immediately necessary, leave the rest for later

4 – Skim sources and only focus on the bits that add real value to your search

5 – In Sttemit and other social media, follow only those that provide you valuable input, you can’t follow everyone

6 – Stay focused on the matter you are working on

7 – Ignore things that are marginally interesting, stick with the real “meaty parts”

8 – Limit and avoid wasting time on stories that reinforce what you already know and believe, look for opposing views

9 – Question everything, leave yourself time to think, dissect and challenge the information you receive

10 – Look to find ways to simplify the information you absorb and reformulate the concepts in simple terms that will help you remember

There are many more ways to improve the value of time spent in research and on the internet.
