Hi all
I just arrived back from vacation and noticed something from relatives that I had not seen in years, judgement. You see when I was younger they all gossiped behind my back that I was too skinny. They called my parents and told them that I was anorexic. The phone lines were all abuzz.
My parents, God bless them, did not pay any attention. They simply said that I would eat when I wanted to and that was that. They were absolutely right. I went through my needing to be skinnier than Twiggy faze and came out the other end on my own.
Now I am older and put on some weight and the relatives are buzzing again. I am not a size zero now so of course something must be done about it. I am monitored and judged for every bite of food or glass of wine that I swallow.
In my younger days I was hurt over this constant monitoring and judgement. Now I simply realize that they are simply not happy with their own lives and so it is easier to cast judgement on others. They are not bad people and in their own minds they are offering concern.
I am writing this, not to cast judgement on them either. I just thought some of you might be going through something similar. A couple of years ago one of my brilliant friends said something to his sometimes critic - "Your opinion of me is none of my business."
That one phrase set me free. It allowed me to be happy with my self - flat, curvy, somewhere in the middle. It allowed me to pursue a career path that 99 percent of my family and friends do not understand. And it allowed me to view others as simply following their own path.
If you are in the middle of some body or psychological thing that is not serving you , then by all means seek help. On the other hand if you are happy with your body, and your life simply remember my friends advice - "what you think of me is none of my business" and wish them well and move on.
