Mabara’s father died when he was 16 years. He was a hard working hunter who had just enough to care for his family of one wife and two children. He sent his children to school and was never tired of telling them to face their studies and be honest. He died when Mabara was about finishing with secondary school.
Life became difficult. The little money Mabara’s mother got from selling oranges was not enough to feed the family. She struggled to keep him in school till he wrote his senior secondary certificate examinations. Mabara passed the examination and furthered writing the university admission examinations of which he passed. He was admitted to the university but he could not go because there was no money. He decided to raise money by working for two years. He got a job as a receptionist in a hotel. He worked hard and was honest. This made his manager and other workers to like him. His salary was small but he kept working. He read his books at home after office hours since he was determined to go to the university.
One day, one of his co-workers invited him to join three others to steal money from the safe. Mabara refused. He said he would never do such a thing because his parents had taught him not to steal. The next morning, a large sum of money was found missing. The managers advised that whoever had stolen the money should return it immediately. Nobody accepted to have stolen the money. One of the managers was then asked to search the workers. Almost everybody was surprised to see a large amount of money in Haliyat’s bag. She had not taken her own share of the money home.
She confessed and named others who shared in the money. They all said that Mabara refused to join them. He was not one of them.
They were arrested by the police and taken to face the law. The most senior manager wrote a letter to thank Mabara for being honest. After the incident, Mabara was promoted and his salary became much bigger. At the end of the second year, he resigned to further his university studies. He became a graduate after five years and served for one year in the National Youth Service Corps. A month after youth service, he got a good job in a big oil company.
