Over years, a thick layer of dust had accumulated over the solar panels. The same dust had accumulated over the mountains and the tree trunks and the bandicoot burrows. Eventually it became so thick that oxygen couldn't get in, and one day it would melt and turn into resin: a perfect cast sealing in the earth and its underground networks.

The dust had gotten in to the bearings on the wind turbine as well, and the wind turbine couldn't spin. It had been slowing down for years.

We had hoped that it would last long enough for us to dig down. There were rumours of an underground spring that carried sulphuric water and heat, but so far all our expeditions had come up with dirt.
