Facebook, or Meta if you prefer, lost 500k users last quarter. But the main reason for the share decline is facebook lost its grip on the young audience.
I am almost a boomer myself but I am lucky to work with much younger people than me. And I must admit that the younger generation estimate their time much better.
A lot was written about the reasons why this generation strive for better work life balance and appreciates their time much more. But I think there is another reason and that is the alternatives.
Web3 today brings back the alternative of ownership. We lost our ground to the rental paradigm.
We used to have true ownership on our sites and servers and data (even books and records), then in the name of intelectual rights streaming took over.
We became renters. We rent server, rent storage, rent content and we lost the ownership. The thing with rent is that its a bad deal for the long term. And the long term arrived. 20 years later we feel the abuse of our landlords. They pick up prices, sell our data and use it to manipulate us. And many of us understand we made a bad deal.
So usually after a bad deal you take your business elsewhere. And here comes web3.
We understand the cloud has its operational advantages, but we want a better model. A more fair one. We deserve the ownership on our data and if not ownership than at least a fair trade and symetric balance of forces.
When you write in facebook its asymetric. Your data is exposed to facebook but you don't get to know what facebook does with it.
In Hive you know you share your data with the entire world. And you get to see the data other users share. You are also taking part of the ownership and success. Unlike stocks, the tokens are useful, and the code is the law.
So if you read this without an hive account I ask yoy, how much is your time worth? I promise spending few minutes to request for an account will pay you back thousands more than what you got for your precious years on facebook.
