I am here answering the call from zonadeescalofrio@zonadeescalofrio for their initiative Halloween 2026 with art and stories in Spooky Zone! 🎃—a celebration that is just around the corner, yet one I believe is often misunderstood by cultures unfamiliar with its origins and meaning. I’ve taken the liberty of laying bare the reality of it in this post.

alt

For many in Latin America, the word "Halloween" immediately conjures up images of horror movies, monsters under the bed, and the commercialisation of the macabre. Growing up far from the autumn chill, it is easy to view the holiday merely as a celebration of darkness. But when I crossed borders and was welcomed by the Canadian wind, the veil of prejudice fell away along with the first leaves of October.

Here, amidst the crunch of copper-hued foliage and breath turning to mist in the night air, I discovered that Halloween is not a tribute to fear. At its purest essence, it is a celebration of peace, community, and innocence.

The Embracing Fire: The True Story

To understand this beauty, we must travel back in time—far beyond Hollywood—to the ancient Celtic peoples. Halloween has its roots in the festival of Samhain (pronounced 'sow-in'), which marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter.

alt

Far from being a night to summon demons, it was a rite of gratitude and preparation. As the days grew shorter and the cold crept in, communities would gather around great bonfires. It was a moment of human warmth in the face of the natural darkness. It was believed that the veil between the world of the living and that of the ancestors grew thinner; thus, food was left at the doorstep—not to appease monsters, but to honor the memory of grandparents and loved ones who had passed on. It was a night of remembrance, respect, and communal connection.

The Art of the Costume: The Freedom of a New Skin

Today, the artistry behind every costume is a display of boundless imagination. My friend issymarie2@issymarie2 brilliantly titles her recent post: "Halloween: Costumes, a skin that does not belong to us". It is a perfect metaphor that invites deep philosophical reflection.

Donning that "skin that does not belong to us" is not an act intended to strike fear or to hide ourselves away; rather, it is a bridge to creative freedom. Paradoxically, by wearing the attire of a hero, a fairy, a ghost, or a pirate, we allow parts of our inner world—often suppressed by the routine of daily life—to emerge. As the Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde aptly stated in his essay The Critic as Artist (1891):

alt

"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth."

The costume is a canvas. Parents sewing capes, faces being painted before the mirror, weeks of preparation—all of this is living art. It is an opportunity to tell the world, and ourselves, that magic exists and that, for one night, we can all be the protagonists of a wondrous tale. ### "Trick-or-Treat": The sparkle in their eyes and the pact of generosity

If there is anything that completely dispels the myth of Halloween as a time of terror, it is that moment at dusk when the streets of Canada fill with little silhouettes running from door to door. My son Matthew is part of it all.

The phrase "trick-or-treat"—which historically stems from a British medieval tradition of going door-to-door offering songs or prayers in exchange for "soul cakes"—has evolved into one of the purest pacts of generosity in modern times.

alt

Seeing the sparkle in the children's eyes is priceless. Doors that are usually kept shut against the cold are thrown wide open, revealing smiling neighbours holding bowls brimming with treats. There is no malice, no horror; there is a community that, by mutual agreement, chooses to spend its money and time on a single thing: buying a child's smile.

alt
Halloween in Ontario 2026...

That night, beneath illuminated pumpkins standing watch over porches like guardians of light, there are no strangers. There are neighbours looking out for one another's children, handing out candy, complimenting costumes, and weaving the bonds of community. You really have to experience it to understand it—to feel it...

alt

To my fellow Latinos who still view this date with the wariness instilled in us by movies, I invite you to take a closer look. Strip away the mask of commercial horror from the holiday, and beneath it you will find the face of Halloween’s true essence: the warmth of a community coming together to face the winter chill, armed only with lanterns, art, abundant joy, and—of course—endless amounts of candy.
