This piece employs Poetic Documentary Realism, a branch of creative non-fiction. It avoids abstract metaphors to focus on the tangible: the smell of charred gorse, the sound of a river reclaiming a high street, and the psychological "stiff upper lip" that has mutated into a dangerous apathy. It is a wake-up call to a society that often mistakes resilience for silence, reminding us that the environment is not a backdrop, but a living witness to our neglect.
The Thames does not murmur today; it heaves,
a grey lung filled with the silt of our discarded promises.
We watch the news through the steam of our tea,
"Unprecedented," the broadcaster says,
a polite word for the fury of a soil that has finally broken its fast.
In the Peak District, the heather no longer blooms; it ignites.
A dry, brittle ghost of a moorland screaming in orange hues,
while we check the forecast for a weekend that may never arrive.
We have treated the seasons like domestic staff—
demanding, ungrateful, surprised when they finally quit.
The ground beneath the cobblestones is shuddering.
It is not a freak of nature; it is a pulse.
A rhythmic drumming against the soles of our expensive shoes,
reminding us that we are guests who have overstayed their welcome
and forgotten to pay the bill.
You see the sun today, a pale disc behind the smog?
Treat it like a parting gift.
For tomorrow, the Earth may decide to close its eyes,
weary of being the only one awake in a room full of sleepers.
The lesson is etched in the rising tide:
Nature does not negotiate. It simply reclaims.
I would like to invite my poet friend @silher. Also, thanks to
