— José Saramago (Libro: Viaje a Portugal)
@issymarie2 y

No one hands us a passport or asks if we want to board when we take our first breath and let out our first cry. That initial journey, life itself, is an itinerary our parents set for us. They put us on a moving train where the first landscapes are family, school, and the society that moulds our earliest beliefs. For years, we are merely passengers gazing out of the window, believing the destination is already written and the scenery will never change... Until we stumble upon our first bumps in the road.
However, as a beautiful thought circulating online rightly reflects: life is a blank canvas with every dawn, a journey full of light and shadow, of laughter and tears. And there comes a precise moment, a crossroads, where we must take the steering wheel. For me, that moment arrived when I decided to embark on the "journey behind the journey.": emigration.
Leaving Venezuela wasn't just a change of postcode; it was a tectonic shift. It meant packing the aroma of freshly brewed morning coffee, the warm buzz of our people, and the unmistakable tropical light into a single 23-kilo suitcase. Emigrating is a leap into the unknown that rewires your soul. When I landed in Ontario, Canada, the shock wasn't just thermal; it was existential. Going from an endless Caribbean summer to the silent (and freezing) majesty of the Canadian snow forces you to recalibrate all your senses.
Moving your life to another country presents you with challenges that no guidebook can fully prepare you for. You come face to face with red tape, culture shock, the daily subtleties of the language barrier, and the need to build a support network from scratch. You discover, through trial and error, that resilience isn't the romanticised concept we were used to, but rather a tool for survival. It is in those difficult moments, in the small hours of the morning when the cold chills you to the bone and homesickness grips your chest, that character is truly forged. You begin to let go of what no longer belongs to you and to embrace change with serenity. You realise that "home" ceases to be a geographical point on a map and becomes a state of mind and the people you surround yourself with.
Amidst all this physical and emotional transit, there was another journey I embarked on in 2018, which became my most faithful logbook: joining Hive. While my body adapted to Ontario, my mind put down roots in the blockchain. Hive has been that parallel train where I have been able to write my own story, document my highs and lows, and share my passions. It has been the place where I realised that true wealth in life doesn't lie in possessions, but in shared experiences, empathy, and the purpose we find when connecting with others.
Today, looking back at the route charted from Venezuela to Canada, and my time on this platform, I understand that happiness is not a terminus. It's not a station you arrive at one day and sit down to rest. Happiness is the way we choose to travel. It is the gratitude for the little things: a sunrise over the snow, a supportive comment on a post, or the courage to get back up after a fall (of which there have been many).
We are the architects of our dreams and the protagonists of our destiny. We keep travelling, we keep learning, because as a great master of literature so brilliantly captured:
"The journey never ends. Only the travellers end. And even they can prolong their voyage in memory, in recollection, in narrative. When the traveller sat on the sand of the beach and said: 'There's nothing more to see', he knew it wasn't true. The end of a journey is simply the start of another."
— José Saramago (Book: Journey to Portugal)
To close, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the @talentos community for fostering this wonderful Talent Gathering: The Journey. Initiatives like this are beacons that invite us to look inwards, allowing us to embrace and honour our own stories. Writing these lines has been, in itself, a healing and eye-opening journey. Before I alight at this station, I'd like to invite my friends
@issymarie2 and
@lanzjoseg to pack their literary bags and share their own life journeys with us.
Let's keep making our lives, our migrations, and our writing an extraordinary journey. I'll see you at the next destination!
