"What do you love about gardening in May? " Sheila's gaze was fixed on me as she asked with her tiny voice.
"Oh my child.. I love gardening in May because it's a season of bloom! " I held Sheila's little hand as we took a walk around our garden.
I love how each of the flowers, trees and other plants live in the moment.
"Sheila did you notice the leaves are fresher?" I asked pointing to some of the leaves in our garden.
"Yes mom.. They are greener and even more beautiful."
Although the wind took of the roof of our little hut in the garden, yet the rain blessed our pretty garden.
"Wow!! The plantain are strong enough to he harvested.." My heart leapt for joy as I got a sight of it.
"We can sell it to make some money mom?" Sheila suggested but I declined.
"No baby, this is our first harvesr from this particular plantation. It's a blessing and so we will consume it and give off some to our family and friends. Can you think of someone who loves plantain? "
She was quiet for a while, I guess she was deep in thought about the right person to gift.
"Amanda! Mom," She broke the silence and hurriedly I brought out my cutlass and harvested the plantain.
We shared them into four part, one for us, another part for Amanda, Sheila's classmate, one for my mom and one for Miss Lauretta my next door neighbor.
"Oh mama, the seeds I planted some weeks back have begun to sprout after I thought they died." Sheila was filled with so much hope and excitement, as she admired the seedlings with wonder.
"Be like this seedling Sheila.. Find the courage to survive despite harsh weather.. You recall all this seedling went through? The scorching sun, and other harsh factors that delayed its growth. But baby, look at it now and see how you also admire it.
Let people see your growth despite your challenges and be inspired by it. Show up every day and when people think they've buried you, sprout again. Does this seedling teach you something today?" I was keen on hearing her response.
"Yes mom, never say never. That's what it taught me."
So baby, remember that you need to take advantage of good conditions to thrive and stay encouraged during the bad conditions. Remember I told you, I love May because the plant blooms. They enjoy the moment and thrive even after.
We both bonded that evening after which, we went straight to the kitchen to prepare unripe pottage as the reward of our hard work on our garden.
