Just three years of gaining independence from their colonial masters, the first set of civilians elected to preside over Zanzibar affairs started looting the common wealth of the nation.
The ante of young military officers were turned having seen how flamboyant the civilian rulers look. They decided to strike on a fateful monday, eliminating the elected president of the nation and other elected officials in the first military coup d'état.
Things began to take a downward curve in the country. Another forceful takeover by other military officers occured just six months apart. Most foreign investors started folding up their businesses because of the uncertainty in governance.
The colonial master of Zanzibar decided to stage a comeback to help stabilize the young independent country. Initially people hailed the foreign intervention as a necessary evil. They believed that it will end in "few years".
But that was not to be. Zanzibar remained under occupation by the foreigners for over two decades. Their resources were looted with reckless abandon. The people revolted against their stay.
It drew international attention and other foreign powers had to prevail on the occupiers to give way. Reluctantly they packed their bags and baggages and left.
