✦Highs and lows ✦
Another morning in the city, another foggy morning that faded into a weary glow. Rain trickled down the glass windows, falling in drops that traced the panes like icy tears. Through the tears, the light of the first rays of the sun filtered through. The plaza was deserted, almost abandoned, its only protection the imposing presence of the great church of time immemorial. There, in a corner as solitary as the plaza itself, a man with bony, thin, pale hands held a red kite. He had found it twenty minutes earlier, curled up on a wooden bench. The kite's tail was completely torn, frayed. The slightly torn paper of the kite vibrated in the morning breeze as if the kite were nervous. The man gazed at the kite, thinking, "Ups and downs."
The man's mind drifted back to a distant time. He saw himself wandering through the plaza as a child, holding the same kite. He remembered his bare feet on the stone and, in that same square, he remembered his mother, with the beauty in her eyes he remembered and that laugh that seemed like crystal. He remembered how his kite soared, and with it, his dreams:
"Ups and downs," he thought again.
From childhood, his life had been full of highs, but many more lows; it always seemed that something couldn't be right, happiness was never complete. Even so, the man learned to love those moments, the good and the bad: for every time something happened that made him feel like he was on the ground, he prayed for something that would lift him up. Ups and downs were his life. He learned to love and he learned to let go, to lose what he loved most. Over the years, the city changed, and everything moved faster. The port modernized, the square lost its fountain, the cobblestones separated, and his mother kept her laughter to herself until it disappeared. Jobs that didn't last, promises that lasted too long. He met a girl who arrived one rainy afternoon with a transparent umbrella. She was a girl who, from living so high up, had lost her fear. He wanted to reach the rooftops like her, but every time he soared, gravity pulled him back down to the cobblestones of the plaza.
"Highs and lows," said the man with the pale hands.
The next love was stronger and filled with dizzying highs. He painted the room blue with white clouds, to feel like he was in heaven. She filled it with smoke. For her birthday, he gave her a kite. She looked at him with disdain and laughed.
"Highs and lows," he thought again, as he clutched the shattered kite to his chest.
The morning dawned, warming the cobblestones. The man saw the children arrive to play. He thought about his childhood, about his hardships, but also about his joys. He thought about his unhappy loves and how, despite his misfortune, they made him feel happy. He thought about his mother and her sad last days, but he also thought about how happy he was when he won that scholarship to the music academy. And there was music, that old love that never abandoned him, and he thought about how he had to give up being a professional but not giving up on it, and every night the guitar whispered secrets to him.
"Sir, that's my kite," a boy said, tugging at his shirt.
"Is it yours?" asked the man with the pale hands.
"Yes, but I see it's broken... can you keep it?"
"No," said the man. "I'm taking it home today. Come and get it tomorrow at the same time!"
That night the man with the pale hands didn't sleep. He sewed and glued the red kite until it looked as good as new. The next morning he arrived in the city, and as they had promised, the boy and the man met.
"Hello!" said the boy.
"Good as new," said the man with the pale hands.
"Thank you! I didn't know it could be fixed," the boy replied, his eyes lighting up. "That's life, it has its ups and downs. Yesterday it was broken and on the ground, today it's fixed and will fly high. That's life, ups and downs. The important thing is to do our best to keep going, to rise," said the man with the pale hands.
The boy took the kite in his hands and the man watched it fly away. A few minutes later, he saw the kite rise majestically in the distance.
"Today is a day of highs," said the man with the pale hands.

✦ Altas y Bajas ✦
-Altas y bajas- volvió a pensar
