✦Crisis Averted✦

The sky split in two at dawn, revealing the colors of day and keeping the darkness of night tucked away in a corner. The glass towers of the great city became sharp pins; where once there had been pride in standing tall above the heads of passersby, now they were a kind of abandoned skeleton, filtering the light in slivers. No one remembers anything, no one knows how it happened, or what caused it. Many spoke of an electrical pulse, of a disturbing sound during the night. Many spoke of the planet itself as a living entity, and that a sigh had caused all the disaster.

In my pocket, I kept a small yellow piece of paper folded in two, with the words "Crisis Averted" written in my cursive handwriting in the center. I had written it, or at least I had those flashbacks, but the truth was I didn't know if it was an order or a plea.

I left the apartment and walked through the streets where traffic lights hung precariously from wires, or simply fell to the ground like blinded eyes. The shops were shrines to objects that had stopped working; every appliance had lost its value, ceased to be useful and functional, replaced by televisions with no signal, clocks with fabricated time, and telephones that received no signal and whose icons on the screen disappeared. In the central plaza, people crowded together, huddled together, and discussed safe routes. An older man, with the air of a doctor and a tangled beard, tapped the ground with his white coat and said:

If we don't organize, next night will be the last.

Someone from within the crowd responded in a trembling voice:

Crisis averted.

The phrase spread like a slogan...

The first real test arrived when the water system failed, the pumps stopped working, and the city's pipes became parched wastelands. People ran to the public fountains in search of the precious liquid, but they were completely dry, save for the occasional puddle that smelled of fuel and metal. Fights broke out among the residents over the last few bottles of water in the stores, over a bucket with a little garden water. I saw one woman shove another over a jerrycan. In the midst of that battle, that commotion over water, someone shouted:

"Crisis Averted!"

Everyone calmed down, and the fights stopped. I just stared in astonishment at everything that was happening, surprised at how those words calmed the collective madness, like a simple order to regain sanity.

My doubts grew with each passing minute. I didn't know what to do, I didn't know what had happened in the city, I didn't know how the planet had reached this crisis, I didn't know what the folded piece of paper in my pocket meant, and I didn't know why those words calmed the crowd trying to survive.

Only one solution occurred to me: go to my job, to the scientific station, as I did every day. On my way to work, the scene repeated itself over and over: people fighting for resources, people hoarding, people struggling to survive. The world was in the midst of an apocalypse. The world, now without water, electricity, and fossil fuels, was in a constant struggle, but a struggle that stopped with the words "Crisis Averted."

When I arrived at my office, I turned on my virtual assistant, and its greeting surprised me:

"Hello, I see the time travel worked. Therefore, Crisis Averted. We can now proceed with the plan."

"Crisis Averted?" I replied, clearly surprised.

"That's right, you don't have your memories yet. Go into chamber 2 and you'll remember everything."

The doors to chambers 1 and 2 opened, and I froze in place.

In chamber 1, my body was in a completely deplorable state. I ran to the bathroom, as fast as I could, and standing in front of the mirror, I peeled back the skin on my cheek. Underneath, it was pure steel... Crisis Averted.

✦ Crisis Evitada ✦

¿Crisis Evitada? - le respondí evidentemente sorprendido.

Cierto, aún no tienes tus recuerdos.

Crisis evitada.
