An important, often forgotten aspect of reading and books begins just before you open it and start reading. It's that moment when the book reaches your hands, sometimes used, stained and creased, other times new and smelling of trees. I always remember how a book came to me, and that's the case with By the Edge of the Rock I Sat Down and Wept by Paulo Coelho. It came to me some time ago as a gift, not a birthday present or for a special occasion, but one of those gifts that close friends give each other simply for the joy of being there, of being present. And without a doubt, it was one of my best reads, one of those books with the perfect length, with just the right moments.
I've always been passionate about love stories, those with happy endings, those with tragic conclusions. I've always loved love stories, those that come with laughter, but also those that come with tears, whether they're about a melancholic Romeo or a shameless Florentino Ariza. This book shows love as it is: an eternal, incomprehensible, supernatural yet human force. It shows love as it is: the essence of life, the driving force behind actions. Isn't love the feeling that holds all the secrets of the world?
It's a book that speaks of that inexperienced, young love, of silences and giving up because of fear, of staying silent when you want to shout at the top of your lungs: I love you. Because sometimes real life is like the book, and fears fill us, flood our souls, and seal our lips. We fear to love and we fear not being loved in return. Perhaps that's why cinema is full of stories about reuniting with first love, because it's a universal feeling that has touched us all. To delve into the pages of this book is to let this reunion bloom on its surface, to call love: destiny.
We find characters strong forged by life's blows, we find wise but melancholic characters who take refuge in their beliefs to heal the wounds of absence. Both with their inner conflicts, both with their own way of loving, both silent and misunderstood. Both with a single heartbeat transformed into desire: to fulfill their dreams.
In love, there are no shortage of stones in the path, steep slopes, risks, obstacles that seem insurmountable. And it is precisely there, in the river, as an invisible protagonist, where life merges and unravels, where truths about existence itself, about love itself, are whispered. Within these pages, there are more than just main characters, more than stories that flow like water; there is love narrated in prose that reads like verse; there is a captivating novel that soothes the soul, with just the right blend of reality and fiction. A tender and warm novel that reads quickly but stays with you forever. There's that feeling of wanting to know more when you reach the last page.
And without a doubt, it's the perfect gift, a way of saying: don't look for miracles anymore, wonders are happening right before your eyes, the extraordinary is unfolding right before your eyes. This book is a reminder: the heart decides, and what it decides is what truly matters.
