As I walked the hot asphalt road, I reminisced about the day we became friends.
"I want some candy."
A young boy and girl shuffled over to the front step of the apartment building and waited for a reply.
"Daaaad! Ma-maaaa! I want some candy!"
"I do too. I did too. Let's go through the big house again."
"Yeah!"
Scampering across the street, the both of them hopped over the gate to the sidewalk. Outside the white and blue house, the boy's mind wandered to the icicles and snowmen inside.
"Come on!"
"All right!"
The pair climbed up the steps and down the hall, pausing outside the front door for the boy to make sure the coast was clear.
"It's all right, hurry!"
"Yeah..."
The ten year old boy and his eight year old friend made their way through the house and into the back yard. It was summer and the weather outside was hot. Sweat beaded on their foreheads while they thought of cool ices they could eat as they ran around the property. It was a nice place to be out of the heat, ice could be had just not easily. Outside was once again a good place to be, but it wasn't going to stay that way if they went inside of the house.
"Finally."
"Shh. We could get in trouble for going through the house."
"I know, but I had to get the candy."
The house was painted blue with a white awning, it looked nice and was a new place to play. There were two front doors and two back doors, that made it easy to get in and out of.
"Why're we whispering?"
"I don't know."
"You're gonna get us in trouble for going through the back door. Let's just go."
"I'll go first, and when they ask, I'll say I found it out here. They won't know, and I'll only get in trouble for going through the back door."
"But it's tempting to go through a back door when the front door is closed."
"Yeah it is, but it's not worth the trouble. What if we get caught?"
"We won't, we've done it too many times in the past."
"I guess..."
"Let's do it, we're all broke. Find something to break it down."
"Okay, let's see..."
A block was a good weight, too heavy though, but a brick was too small and not worth the effort. The pair made their way back across the street, past the fence and gate, on through the front yard, and back to the blue house.
"Found something dad! Can we get some candy?"
His eight year old friend took the brick, threw it at the door, and the pair sneaked into the house.
"Let's go... there's no noise from inside."
"Okay."
Digging along the wall and under the kitchen table where stacks of paper were folded and marbled, the boy found a piece about the correct size, picked it up, and threw it once more. It went through the window and hit the floor without any problems. When the door opened, the two entered the house, grabbed the candy and ran back out.
The blonde haired boy smiled to himself, and his friend nodded his head. The pair stood in the yard once more, eating their candy; it was just like it was when they were little.
Strangely enough, the eight year old knew of the target window in the kitchen and went directly to that one.
"That one's good."
"Yeah, try for a back window."
"Yeah!"
The two rounded the back porch and started walking towards the kitchen door. They hadn't gone far when their friend interjected.
"Let's not go through the back door, they'll know they were here maybe."
"Whatever."
The pair made their way to the front of the house and found a window with a small tree on the outside, it was the target window.
"I've got something. What about the back door?"
"We'll just climb through, no one will ever know."
"Okay."
The two boys went out and over the fence, around the shed and into the back yard of the house. Hunched over the windows with their eyes closed and noses wrinkled. The ten year old was the first to give his approval to the back door because he was quite fond of it; it was accidental and not why they entered the house. One hand shoved inside, then the other to push the door all the way open. The boy stumbled in and the door swung closed behind him. Winded, the boy bent over and took a deep breath. His friend found a metal object to break the window with. There were two possibilities; a metal object that could tap the window open and a brick to slam it closed. Any sort of metal object would suffice for him, the eight year old had a metal string around his wrist; he slid the end of the string inside the window and tapped it up with the metal object before slamming it shut. The boy sat on the floor, panting while the door opened.
"I can see light through it, let's go. Dad will yell again, but I think we have enough of the ice."
The two walked to the back door and grabbed their candy, not even turning around to look at their friend as they walked off.
