'Wuthering Heights' is a story set on the lonely Yorkshire moors of England. Nelly Dean (the landlady) tells the sad and troubled story of two families, the Earnshaws and the Lintons. The main characters are Heathcliff, an orphan adopted by the Earnshaws, and Catherine Earnshaw, his childhood friend. The novel covers themes of love, revenge and the ill effects of obsession. Heathcliff, driven by a strong desire for revenge, causes many dark and tragic events in the story. The book explores deep feelings and how people can be both loving and cruel.
The book was published in 1847 and this was my first exposure to a Gothic novel. It is a type of story known for its mysterious atmosphere, often containing supernatural elements and intense emotions. "Wuthering Heights" has a dark, creepy setting on the moors and features characters coping with strong emotions such as love, despair and a desire for revenge. The story includes mysterious events and the presence of ghosts. The combination of these elements in 'Wuthering Heights' gives it an atmosphere typical of gothic novels.
'Wuthering Heights' was written in the Victorian era. British literature at the time was dominated by a fascination with Gothic motifs, romance and the exploration of human emotion. Many Victorian novels, including Wuthering Heights, delved into complex characters and intense emotional landscapes. The era also witnessed an increased interest in social issues, with the rise of social reform movements and discussions about morality and social norms.
I noticed several poetic devices in this book. First of all, I really liked Brontë's use of what she calls 'foreshadowing' to suggest the tragic events that will take place. For example, at the beginning of the novel, one of the characters has a nightmare about a ghost trying to get into Wuthering Heights. This foreshadows the supernatural elements that will occur later in the story. There are instances of dramatic irony in the novel where the reader knows more about the characters and events than the characters themselves. An example of this is when Heathcliff overhears only part of Catherine's conversation and misinterprets it, leading to misunderstandings and conflicts that will follow the characters to the end of the story. I also noticed that some things were presented symbolically. The moors serve as a symbol throughout the novel, representing the untamed nature of the characters. Often the weather also dovetails with the mood of the Earnshaw or Linton households. Wuthering Heights itself becomes a symbol of passion, chaos and the destructive power of unbridled emotions.
I read this book for a literature class, which doesn't change the fact that this novel was an enjoyable break from the books I usually read, and I'd love to pick up some older reading in the future.

Często też pogoda zgrywa się z nastrojami panującymi w domu Earnshawów czy Lintonów. Same Wichrowe Wzgórza stają się symbolem namiętności, chaosu i niszczycielskiej siły niepohamowanych emocji.
Książkę przeczytałam na zajęcia z literatury, co nie zmienia faktu, że ta powieść była przyjemnym oderwaniem od książek, które zwykle czytam i chętnie sięgnę po jakąś starszą lekturę w przyszłości.
