Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing 馃帿 Book Review

As a huge fan of the TV series Friends, I finally had to read the autobiography of the dead actor who played the TV series Chandler.
Matthew Perry gave his book the name: 'Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing'. I think he encapsulated most of the themes in it with this title. The author tells the whole story of his life, shows the development of his career over the years, talks about his friendships and relationships with women, and the Big Terrible Thing refers, of course, to the addictions that dragged Perry down.
Alcoholism and drug addiction is a widely developed theme here, as Matthew started drinking and taking various substances at a very young age, making it hard for him to stay sober afterwards, even despite the demanding work on set. It is simply frightening how addiction can destroy a life. The author also talks a lot about his determination to live clean. He gives an interesting account of his thought processes and talks about what drove him to stay sober and what drove him away from it. As you can guess, I was very curious to see how the author would portray his participation in the series and his relationships with the other actors, after all it was a big part of his life that brought him worldwide fame. What I didn't expect, however, was that taking part in Friends, for example, gave him the strength to get up sober every morning. After reading this book, even the series itself is looked at from a slightly different perspective.
One fact puzzles me, which I learned partly from the internet, after the actor's death. As we know from the book, his girlfriend was Julia Roberts for a while, but Matthew, through his fear of rejection, ended the relationship. Perry, from what I read, died at the age of 54, probably from a ketamine overdose. This was on 28 October last year, Roberts' birthday - coincidence? Probably not, but I was curious about this coincidence of dates.
In conclusion, I think this book can help people to know that they are not the only ones struggling with addiction and not to give up. If you are looking for a funny book about the backstory of 'Friends', this is definitely not the one. It's a book about mistakes, problems and life experiences.
