It’s been almost two months since I’ve slept well, haha. It’s been a tough process. Despite everything, I’d been sleeping a little better these past few days, but the weather has also made it hard for me to fall asleep properly. Sometimes it’s really hot, and other nights, negative thoughts just make me feel insecure and give me insomnia. But this week has been worse— we’ve had extremely unpredictable weather and constant power outages (though not as many as in other states where people can go without power for over 8 hours).
These last three nights have been terrifying—heavy rains causing flooding, thunderstorms with lightning that lit up the entire room. For the first time in his life, my son was scared of a storm, since he’d never experienced one this intense before. He was also a little scared after the earthquake and thought it was going to shake at any moment. What we didn’t know was that it would indeed shake again—two nights later, in the early morning hours of August 18, an earthquake shook our homes once more. I’m grateful it was a short tremor, but it was strong; we felt it quite a bit.
As you can imagine, we didn’t sleep well. In fact, I went to bed late last night, and just as I was falling asleep, the earthquake hit. I was terrified, and the insomnia came back again. Many people even started live-streaming on TikTok and flooding social media with the news. Luckily, it wasn’t a tragedy, but it did scare us a lot, especially considering the tragedy we went through not long ago. And here I am, having hardly slept at all—I think I only managed to get two hours of sleep. My eyes hurt, my head feels heavy, and my face feels stiff… I spent the whole day trying to take my mind off things, so I started tidying up the house and watching TV with my son.
I hope I can sleep tonight. I'm already very worried about getting enough rest because it's really taking a toll on me, both emotionally and mentally. I'm so tired, and I feel like I need to sleep for about three days straight to wake up feeling like new.
