About Today’s Artwork

When I got up this morning, I looked out my window over River Aire and saw them. They had come back. The mute swans! 🦢🦢🦢

Starting a couple of days ago, bitterirony@bitterirony noticed that the swans had returned to the river after a brutal summer in which they stayed away for a cooler climate, no doubt.

I started taking photographs of them from our sixth floor flat, but I really couldn’t figure out how I would create my signature CWH x WORDLE image of the day with the photos I had taken from so far away.

So as a way to get myself unstuck and preserve my creativity and mood, I journaled about it. I began with what I would love to see in the image.

I started with the swans, like “what kind of swans are they?” Also, how can I manage the issue of distance versus scale for an imagined version that included the patch of land that is between the river and the canal? I thought it’d be fun to have NisaBoo join me on the bank for a little picnic.

Once back at the image composer, it took a sketch, 7 photos and a couple of hours of intense art direction to build out the image for Day 27. Note the Geoxx Hive Red sneakers. I wear these to hivefest@hivefest and buzzparty@buzzparty events. So although as I explained in Day 26’s “About the Artwork” section that I’m missing my first HiveFest, I included a sartorial nod to roelandp@roelandp and the gang in Barcelona wth the trainers and the bag that I sketched ✍️ out the old-fashioned way inspired by the Hive window screen from my studio.

As for our swans, these are not two kinds of swans, but one. They are Mute Swans 🦢. The difference in colour is attributed to their age. Adults (Cygnus olor) show the glorious white plumage. The juveniles (Cygnets) show the grey, then grow into a greyish-brown feather 🪶 scheme. Just before their first birthday the glory of white (of course, I dig that!) surrounds their full size winged bodies.

Have you been to Leeds to visit the weir at River Aire? There’s another story just waiting to be illustrated!

AI Disclaimer: These daily illustrations take a lot of work even though I am using Chat GPT as my designer inking tool. I don’t start with a prompt like more reasonable people do. I begin fresh every day by selecting some combo of my own sketches, photos, and success elements of previous CWH Wordle illustrations, e.g., the worked Wordle puzzle using Hive-centric words. To date, this being Day 27, I’ve yet to create one of these images in less than an hour. Even if you don’t work my original puzzles or visit us at creativeworkhour@creativeworkhour, I hope you enjoy the details built into each digital drawing. ✍️
