Howard Phillips Lovecraft (H.P. Lovecraft) is an American writer best known for being the creator of the cosmic terror, he writes science fiction and horror. The general characteristic of the same is to be the father of all the cosmic horrors, the iconic characters such as Cthulhu, azathoth or yog-Sothoth are some of the most important and known of his bestiary.
The best-known character of said bestiary is no more than the popular Cthulhu, and it was thanks to the popularity of his short novel "The Call of Cthulhu", so much so, that even though this character was born in the year 1928 today in 2018 remains one of the most important characters and an icon of pop culture.

Probably the strangeness of this world, added to the coarseness of it is what directly or indirectly has influenced these gods are so majestic and popular. Personally I am a big fan of Yog-Sothoth better known as the "All in one", "the key and the door" among other nicknames, my favorite novel is "The Dunwich Horror" although I admit that "the shadow over Innsmoutn" also it makes you compete.
I do not know if Lovecraft was the first author to publish content of this type, one that saw the human being as an insignificant being in comparison to these deities we call "The Great Old Ones". But it was certainly he who popularized them, the legacy of H.P. Lovecrat has influenced much of modern writers, even Stephen King himself has said that the Lovecraftian universe has been his inspiration for a large number of his works.
It would be impossible to cover all Lovecraftian's bestiary, if we go from the builders, to the originals, it would be an infinitely long post, just the famous Cthulhu is the possessor of 4 children, being Ghatanothoa perhaps the most famous. Let's agree with saying that not only in science fiction movies and literature has remained, but the influence of the Primitives as all elements of pop culture has even become popular in anime and comics, being always powerful characters but never faithfully adapted.
