The series of articles dedicated to the gripping saga of Tekken, the celebrated fighting game born in the 1990s and which keeps millions of gamers (and others) glued to their Play Station consoles (and not only), continues. Last time I talked about the fifth chapter where Jin Kazama won the Iron Fist tournament by defeating his great-grandfather Jinpachi Mishima. With the disappearance of Heihachi as a result, the young man became the leader of the Zaibatsu and unfortunately his profile changed completely: from a good boy capable of taming the devil gene, Jin became a ruthless dictator like his grandfather.
Tekken 6 was released by Namco on 26 November 2007 for arcade in Japan and then released on 27 October 2009 in America for the Play Station 3 and XBox 360 platforms. Over the next few days, the video game was released throughout the rest of the world, followed by a slightly revised version for Play Station Portable (Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion).
This chapter in the famous video game series features the highest number of characters. In fact, it ranges from 40 (playable) to 43 (if we also count Kuma, Panda, Azazel and Nancy-Mi847j).
There are about 19 levels with as many as 12 multi-level arenas that have a completely new feature: you can fight either during the day or at night, so time passes during the player's adventure. In addition, it is possible to interact with the surroundings in a more decisive manner as the floor and walls can be broken through and take damage. In some arenas, it is possible to break through the ground and fall into a sub-level by repeatedly sending a character to the ground.
The changes also affected some of the characters in the King Of Iron Fist Tournament, one of them Yoshimitsu, who is once again different in appearance and with somewhat different fighting techniques than before. Not only has he changed weapons, but Yoshimitsu has been enhanced in the use of combos based on hand-to-hand combat and the use of weapons. Even Bryan Fury ends a combo by shooting his opponent with a shotgun. In addition, one can purchase various clothes and accessories for one's characters.
Another important aspect is the presence of two new game modes, namely Rage and Campaign. In the first case, activation occurs when the life bar is about to run out, so it will flash and shots will be twice as damaging. In the second case, on the other hand, we are dealing with the classic scrolling fighting game where the player can use Lars Alexandersson and then unlock all the other characters. The campaign mode is actually a reference to Tekken Force (Tekken 3 and 4) and Tekken Devil Within (Tekken 5). Finally, from this story chapter it is possible to play Tekken with other players around the world.
Jin Kazama, after winning the fifth tournament, takes control of the Zaibatsu and becomes stingier than his father and grandfather. The world is threatened by his power craze and even declares the Mishima Zaibatsu organisation as an independent nation.
Heihachi and Kazuya meanwhile have lost their tracks but new characters are on the way. One of them is Lars Alexandersson, leader of the rebel Tekken Force faction and opponent of Jin. Meanwhile, Kazuya makes his appearance again and together with the G-Corporation attempts to thwart his son's rise.
Meanwhile, Lars loses his memory after meeting the cyborg Alisa and together with the latter makes several journeys to recover his lost memories. This journey will go hand in hand with that of the player: together they will discover that Lars is the illegitimate son of Heihachi Mishima and that he was a member of the Tekken Force and the rebel group. After meeting Heihachi himself and being helped by Raven, Lars travels to Egypt to stop Kazuya and Jin's fight, but not before fighting Alisa, who turns out to be a bodyguard of Jin's commanded to spy on the new protagonist. After defeating them both it is revealed why Jin had travelled to Egypt.
His purpose was to awaken the demon Azazel to kill him and put an end to the devil gene. Young Kazama defeats the monster but is forced to sacrifice himself, losing his life. The sixth tournament ends with Alexandersson winning and Jin actually being found alive in the desert by Raven.
The note to add is that in Tekken 6 the endings of the fighters are not canonical with the story because it is actually told in the campaign mode.
Despite its great success in commercial terms, Tekken 6 would have made video game critics (which I also agree with) turn their noses up at the new fighting abilities of the characters based on half-height combos, allowing a single player to win fights with this less than elegant contrivance.
Indeed, this novelty has made the video game lose more than a little realism and has created a lot of discontent in global Tekken tournaments, where many experienced players prefer to appeal to this new system rather than follow the old models. However, there are also those who have ranked this title as the best fighting game ever seen on Sony Play Station consoles.
