Today I resume my column dedicated to the reconstruction of the Tekken saga and the Mishima family, protagonist of a fight to the death that still leaves many question marks on the final outcome (at the bottom of this post the previous episodes).
Today I will dedicate space to the fourth chapter of the saga that will put young Jin (winner of the third tournament) face to face not only with his grandfather Heihachi but also with his past and his origins, both human and demonic.
Let's go in order.
In Tekken, Kazuya managed to avenge the wrongs suffered by his father during his childhood years by defeating him in the finals and thus becoming the leader of the Mishima Zaibatsu. Surviving after being thrown off a cliff, the elder Mishima returned to the attack by regaining the throne of the Organisation exactly two years later (Tekken 2), ensuring that he had finally eliminated Kazuya and the devil he carried within.
However, Heihachi was unaware that, during the second The King Of Iron Fist Tournament, Kazuya had entered into a relationship with Jun Kazama: from their union would later be born Jin, who would become the protagonist and winner of Tekken 3. It was during this last chapter of the saga that the Mishima came across the figure of Ogre, an alien figure referred to as the "God of Combat" or "God of Destruction".
Intent on capturing the mysterious creature in order to study it and exploit it in such a way as to make him stronger, Heihachi agrees to take in and train his nephew, motivated by a desire to avenge his mother who disappeared after engaging in a bloody fight against the terrible Ogre.
At the end of the tournament, Jin eliminates the enemy but is betrayed by his grandfather who doesn't hesitate to have him killed by the Tekken Force. It is at that very moment that the devil gene awakens, allowing him to stay alive, eliminate the Tekken Force soldiers and defeat his grandfather before flying off and disappearing.
Before moving on to the game's plot and analysis, it remains to be clarified how Jin obtained the devil gene. In the final part of the Tekken 3 trailer, we see that Jin encounters a purple spiritual entity that imprints the demonic mark on his arm. Apparently, Devil would leave Kazuya's body to meet Jin and "infect" him with his own powers.
Yet, many argue that Jin did not actually receive the devil's power, but merely inherited it as Kazuya's son. In fact, the Tekken 3 trailer also leads us to ask several questions about Kazuya himself who, as a result, either still carries Devil within him or he has left his body but has infected his blood in such a way as to allow him to still enjoy the powers of his negative side.
Many argue that it is impossible for Devil to have left Kazuya behind, but the truth is that from Tekken 4 onwards there will only be talk of the Devil gene and the figure of Devil will slowly return to being seen as totally subservient to the will of its bearer: in simple terms Kazuya will be able to manage at will the immense evil force that in Tekken 2 led him to an existential crisis that cost him his life.
But how did the only son of the villainous Heihachi survive? How will he relate to his son Jin? What is left of the teachings of the loving Jun? What impact will this have on the plot?

Namco released Tekken 4 as an Arcade version in July 2001, while it was released for Sony Play Station 2 consoles on 28 March 2002 in Japan, 23 September 2002 in North America and 13 September 2002 in Europe. The game was obviously a great success because it was the first Tekken released for Sony's new platform. Namco also introduced several new features such as the return of Kazuya, a total reinterpretation of Jin's fighting style, five new characters, introductory texts for each fight in Story Mode, save fights, a new graphic design, and the ability to destroy objects in the rings.
In the new episode, Jin's fighting style is a far cry from Mishima Karate and Kazama Kobudo (we will find out why later). Kazuya Mishima is also noticeably different from the gameplay that distinguished him in Tekken 2. All in all, Tekken 4 is enjoyable in terms of both gameplay technique and visuals.
In addition to Arcade Mode, Tekken 4 has retained the multiple game modes inherited from previous chapters such as Tekken Force, Time Attack, Versus Battle, Team Battle, Survival, Practice and Theater (a collection of all characters' epilogues each time the fighting game is completed). Story Mode, on the other hand, is a new addition to Team Namco.

Two years after the third tournament, Heihachi Mishima attempts to recover Ogre's blood in order to mix it with his own and thus become more powerful. However, after various experiments, Zaibatsu scientists discover that such a union is not possible due to the incompatibility of Ogre's gene with the human one: the only way to make this happen is to use a DNA sample linked to the devil gene. Heihachi thus discovers that he needs his nephew Jin, whose trail has been lost and so it is impossible to track him down and capture him.
The gamer will however be given the opportunity to learn that the young warrior has retreated to Australia, having disowned his family and developed new fighting techniques that will completely distance him from what he learned two years earlier.
Heihachi, however, launches a search to find Jin and just when all seems lost, he comes across a photo depicting a human body ravaged by wounds and burns: the image dates back twenty years and immortalises Kazuya's corpse.
Heihachi decides to retrieve his son's body and after some time discovers that it is being held in custody by the G-Corporation, an organisation that has always been interested in knowing the nature of the devil gene. Heihachi thus sends his soldiers to the G-Corporation's laboratories in Nepal, with the aim of taking away all the material needed for the creation of a new genetically modified creature.
The Tekken Force manages to take away the files of the research servers, ignoring the fact that in the meantime, in the G-Corporation's second headquarters located in Nebraska, a handful of men are eliminated by a skilled martial arts expert whom Heihachi knows very well: he is Kazuya, brought back to life by the devil's power and the G-Corporation's intervention, which has allowed him to get to know the gene's characteristics in depth and to be able to fuse with it, gaining full control over it.
Heihachi realises that Kazuya is ready to declare war on him again and so old Mishima takes the opportunity to implement a new plan, namely to organise the fourth tournament to lure Kazuya and Jin and then capture them and use them for his own crazy purposes. Aware of the trap set by his father, Kazuya agrees to participate in the tournament, as does his son Jin, who will meet for the first time the man his mother had tried to bring to the right path and whom she had believed dead for 21 years.
The tournament thus begins, among new and old characters driven by great ambitions or eager to find an answer that could change their lives. Jin defeats all opponents and finds himself having to fight his father in the semi-finals, then Heihachi captures him and imprisons him in the Honmaru, consequently drawing Kazuya into his net to challenge him in the final.
Heichachi defeats his son and wins the fourth tournament but, instead of eliminating him, invites him to follow him into the Honmaru to show him a surprise: for the first time Kazuya meets the fruit of his relationship with Jun and wishes to absorb its power to become a complete being. Heihachi then discovers Kazuya's true plan but is not in time to stop him because he takes on semi-demonic guise and with his psychic powers knocks out his father.
At this point Jin is reawakened and once freed from his chains engages in the inevitable confrontation with his past. The young Kazama confronts his parent and defeats him, then hurls himself at Heihachi, reducing him to death.
His hatred for his grandfather suddenly takes over, Jin transforms into a demon and prepares to deal him the death blow, a mortal blow that he will not deliver in the end because his mother's vision induces him to spare his grandfather and fly away, reminding him to thank Jun Kazama himself that the thread of his life did not break at that very moment.
The hero of the saga once again repudiates his family and runs away from it, hoping never to lose his humanity. From this ending, which can be obtained if the player finishes the game with Jin (who must be unlocked) Namco will tie in to start the Tekken 5 storyline immediately.
