Many people think that they cannot make a habit. They say they failed to go on a diet. They gave up learning another language. The examples go on and on.
Why do we fail to do things? It is simple: because it is not our habit. In our daily life, two thirds of our activities in a day are habitual ones. In other words, we spend most our time on habits ranging from brushing your teeth to reading morning newspaper.
But why do we follow our habits rather than trying new things every day? It is again quite easy question to answer. That’s because doing something new costs your brains a lot of energy. On the other hand, habitual activity can be done relatively easier because it has been done for many times already.
In order to attain our goal, it is reasonable to make the target activity a habit because doing so, you can control two thirds of your day. That will have great influence on your life.
But it is quite hard to make a habit. Doing excercise would be a total new activity if you didn’t do it in the first place. If you just try to do excercise, you grew unwilling to do it in a few days. How can we avoid this problem?
“Make your daily goal small” that’s a quite effective way to make a habit. Setting a high goal from the start will make your unmotivated. Instead, you can make a small goal. It should be ridiculously small. For example, “i will do push-up once a day”. That’s fine. One push-up is not that hard. You can do it in 2 seconds. If you feel like doing more, you can add after doing one push up.
Once you get a habit of doing one push-up a day, you can add up the number to 10, 20, 30... you will have a great habit.
