I sew my clothes to make best fit comfortable clothes, to avoid stress to jump around shops to look for an ideal one, AND to be friendly to the environment and other people ... I think I do better than those who shop tons of clothes from fast fashion stores just to wear two to three times but still I had a difficult feeling to buy always new fabric from stores and throw away small pieces. Probably the best is to buy and wear used clothes. On the other hand I will have the same problem that I have to see around shops and they don't fit perfectly :(
My solution these days is to use fabric from old clothes. Thanks to my daughter I started remodeling my old clothes to hers. I made her pant from my broken jeans. I'm happy to see my favorite jeans has its second life.
I made a pullover for my daughter out of my sewing friend's one (shown in the top of this post). I used a waist band and ankle cuffs from my daughter's pant for my friend's baby's pant ... as I couldn't find fabric with fitting color in my leftover fabric box.
In addition to taking fabric for kids' clothes from adult clothes, I remodeled my linen dress to fit better (with my life long pattern!). Now it perfectly fits. Yey yey yey!!
When we see used clothes also a source of fabric in addition to buying new fabric at stores, we have a way more options and can be more friendly to the environment. Used clothes can be cheaper than to buy new fabric especially in Germany where fabric is quite expensive ... not sure it's just too cheap in Asia though. I didn't go to see second hand shops and markets but now I'm interested in going to see them (for fabric shopping) :)
So why not using old clothes for sewing!
私が自分で洋服を作ろうとしているのは、自分の好みに合う服がほしいのと、もうひとつ、なるべく環境負荷や他の人からの搾取を減らしたいという思いからです。ただ、新しい生地を買って、裁断後に残った小さな端切れを捨てて・・・というところにはまだもやもやする気持ちがあります。あと、生地を作るプロセスは必ずしも環境によいものではないし。古着を着るのが一番なのですが、いいものを見つけるのが面倒だし、合わないことも多い・・・。
そんな中、依然新しい生地を買うこともあるものの、折衷案として既存の洋服を分解して新しい洋服に作り変えるようになりました。これ、昔は普通に着物なんかでやっていたことなんですよね、きっと。
どんなことをしたかというと、穴が空いて着られなくなった私のズボンから子どものを作ったり、お友達のトレーナーから子どものものを作ったり（投稿冒頭の写真）。子どもの洋服はひとまわり小さいので大人の古着から生地をとりやすいです。
お友達の子どもの出産祝いにズボンを作った時は、ウエストと足首の部分はうちの子どもの古いズボンからとりました・・・ ;)
大人の洋服から子どもの洋服を作る以外では、自分の洋服を作り変えました。去年作ったリネンのワンピースのシルエットを先日完成した人生で使えるワンピースの型紙に沿って変えてすっきりしました。スカートの広がりを抑えて、腕の動きに合わせて腕回りを調整して、後ろ身頃はVあきでなくしました。
生地屋さんで生地を買って洋服を作る場合、選べる生地には限りがありますが、古着まで視野に入れると選択肢がぐっと広がります。環境にも良いと思います。ドイツでは生地が高いので、新しく生地を買うよりも古着の方が安いなんてことも十分あり得ます。今まで古着屋さんを覗きに行くことはほとんどなかったのですが、古着屋さんや古着市をゆっくり覗きに行ってみたいと思うようになりました。
生地の選択肢の幅を広げてかつ環境にもよいということで、古着を作り変えることを考えてみてはどうでしょうか :)
余談： 手作りというと、品質は買ったものより劣るけれど作るときに込められた気持ちが大事なんて語られ方をすることがあります。気持ちが大事なのは否定しませんが、私はきちんとプロ級に仕上げたいです。そしてそれも可能なはず。これはまた別途書きたいトピックです。プロとして縫っていた祖母が「素人くさい仕事はするんじゃないよ」と言っていたのが懐かしいです。
