As I haven't coated my work table yet, I don't want to put cups and glasses directly on it. I was using a piece of paper as a coaster alternative and thought about making a coaster for a while.

It's three days holiday and I have no urgent work in my hands. So why not I make a coaster finally.

I wanted to try Japanese embroidery "Sashiko" for my coaster.

Sashiko - Wikipedia

Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embroidery technique both to strengthen and and to decorate fabric. Clever, practical and beautiful!

I asked an advice which books and websites to read to one of my friends in Berlin who makes Sashiko and related workshops as a professional.

According to her recommendation, I ordered following book on Amazon.jp:

I picked a pattern that looks simple and doable for a beginner, me.

First, I made a 10cm x 10cm pattern with a grid, which I found later it was not needed ... 😂

I cut fabric and made a copy of a pattern. This process was also not needed ...

In the end I figured out just I could have used a piece of tracing paper 😅 It's away quicker and easier ...

After tracing the pattern, fun time starts. I enjoyed the calm and silent time making simple stitches one by one. It's like knitting. Or it may be like doing Sudoku or puzzles for some people.

It was so addictive and I made another two 🧵

I know you'll find my stitches are a bit random on some part ... Practice makes perfect 😉 I'm happy to have a coaster for my desk.

Now I think about making Sashiko DIY kit to sell at a market where I have a stand every two weeks. Hosting a Sashiko workshop at the market would be nice too. Many things to think about.

That's it! Happy Needle Work Monday to all 🧵
