A quirky title, I know. Given that the German state I live in is on an autumn break, I thought I'd share some recent reflections.

My Favorite Meals

Over the past few weeks, while trying to solidify meal and food concepts for markets and catering, I've been pondering about my personal food preferences. While I could probably sell a lot of Bao using popular and easy-to-handle ingredients, my desire is to share what I love and be connected with customers who I share my values.

Even in my hectic 20s when I was working as an office worker in Tokyo, I loved vegetables. But I was also a huge fan of heavy meals like grilled meat and beer. Since then, my tastes have shifted due to the earthquake, moving to Europe, simply getting older and so on.

While my preferences might change again in the future, I currently find energy in vegetarian dishes centered around seasonal vegetables and grains sourced locally. These meals warm my body, improve body circulation, and give me a satisfying feeling of digestion after few hours.

Here are some of the meals I enjoy:

  • Vegetable soup with bread or rice
  • Vegetable side dishes (like natto, tofu, hijiki seaweed, kimchi, or western dishes like quiche, ratatouille, bean marinade) with rice or bread
  • Noodle soups with proper broth, akin to pho
  • In the summer, salads abundant with fresh vegetables

Tonight, I'm making a curry with beans and spinach, served with rice. For my daughter who isn't a big fan of curry, I've prepared chestnut rice balls, miso soup with sweet potatoes and tofu, and tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette). I know, it looks like quite a lot to do and I learned how to handle this in peace.

Why I Love This kind of Meals

Though I'm quite living in the way I want, as I've aged, I've felt the need to take better care of my body. Between housework, my job, and parenting these past few years, it's no wonder my body needs rest and maintainance. Plus, I want to maintain good performance.

I've started to wonder if perhaps there are other people out there who feel the same way. Busy individuals especially in their 30s and 40s, and perhaps others around them, might share my affinity for these types of meals and other way to relieve their tension in daily life.

The Witch Hotel Idea

Yesterday, while visiting a friend's family with my daughter, she wouldn't stop talking about witches. Personally, I've always admired the archetype of the kind, wise grandmotherly witch, so I listened intently.

Then we started talking about "Witch Hotel". A place where wholesome meals are served, accompanied by a library filled with cookbooks, a garden, and a kitchen. A stay for a few days there would leave one refreshed and ready to face everyday life. Applying what one learns and realizes at the Witch Hotel could lead to a smoother daily life.

I've always wanted to create a library of cookbooks, and somehow, it all seemed to connect now.

What I Can Do Now...

Starting from the Market and Catering

I've decided to sharpen my food concept when serving at markets. I aim to introduce something like "zen food" that's balancing for the body, both at my market stall and on social media.

I've also raised prices slightly from the last time to ensure that I can prepare dishes meticulously and without stress.

Collecting Cookbooks

Although I've been sidetracked recently, around springtime, I used to invest a portion of my cooking-related income into cookbooks. I'd like to start that again.

In The Future ...

I organize detox and health food events, and dream of renting or buying a property for the Witch Hotel that could host around 10 guests, I can work at and live in.

Such a fantasy-filled post! But good to have dreams 😁

What's your meal for maintaining good health? Would you be interested in staying at the Witch Hotel?
