This morning, after making coffee and stepping out onto the balcony, I noticed that my tomatoes have started to ripen. These tomatoes were a mystery as I didn’t know their name, but it seems they are Paul Robeson tomatoes, a large black variety from America. Additionally, another large tomato that was mislabeled seems to be a Green Zebra, a green striped tomato. Labels can be meaningless, but it’s these unexpected surprises in gardening that make it fun. 😉

With no recent heatwaves, the carrots in my daughter’s garden plot have started to sprout. This time, let’s see if she can wait through the thinning process or will harvest all the mini carrots. Either way, it’s great that she is enjoying gardening. I'm really happy to see her being busy in the mini balcony 😊

The spring onions I mentioned starting last week have sprouted and are growing well. Next to them are some shungiku (edible chrysanthemum). Speaking of leeks, there’s a perennial leek called Winterheckenzwiebel that can be harvested year-round. I thought it would be convenient to grow, so I ordered seeds and planted them in the cell next to the already sprouted leeks.

My obsession with spring onions is because it's used quite often in Japanese food such as topping on Natto rice, miso soup etc. In Germany during winter, they are imported from Egypt. It feels odd that something I eat daily travels 3,000 kilometers flying oversea. So, I’m making a small effort to grow my own. I plan to experiment with moving the plants to a semi-indoor hallway during the harsh winter to continue cultivation.

Besides food, I’ve been drying herbs for smudging. By bundling fragrant herbs like lavender, sage, and rosemary, and hanging them on a lemon tree, they dry nicely.

Earlier in spring, to relieve stress, I started writing my thoughts on paper and burning them. I added some sage from the balcony to the fire, and it smelled wonderful. This led me to explore smudging, known as Räuchern in German. I bought a book to learn more about which herbs can be used and discovered that many everyday plants are suitable.

Upon returning from Berlin, I found that the traditional 2-meter tall kale plant I had eagerly been growing since spring had been devoured by plump a caterpillar. He must have been very hungry. That’s gardening. Fortunately, all three of my Italian black kale plants are intact. I brought the caterpillar outside. I gave him the plant.

Wishing everyone a great week. Happy gardening!

image.png

Happy gardening!
