The Art of Unlearning: Why Changing Your Mind is a Sign of Growth.
Hello everyone in the Reflections community!
We live in a world that heavily emphasizes acquiring new things—new skills, new information, new credentials, and new achievements. We are constantly urged to add more to our mental cupboards. But lately, I’ve been reflecting on a process that is just as important, if not more so: the act of unlearning.
As we move through life, we pick up habits, beliefs, and ways of thinking that served us well at one point. Maybe it was a defensive posture we developed during a tough season, a rigid view on how success should look, or simply a study method that worked in school but fails us in our daily routines today.
Holding onto these outdated mindsets often creates an invisible weight. We try to build new habits on top of old foundations that no longer support where we want to go.
Unlearning isn't about admitting failure or declaring that your past was wrong; it's about holding your perspectives loosely enough to let better insights take their place. It requires the courage to sit down and ask: "Is this belief still serving the person I am becoming today?"
Real maturity begins when we stop defining ourselves by how steadfastly we cling to old opinions, and start measuring growth by how gracefully we can let go of what no longer fits.
I’d love to leave you with a small question for reflection today: What is one belief, habit, or assumption you had to "unlearn" recently to make room for your own progress?
Looking forward to reading your thoughts and perspectives in the comments!
