Last week, in a poem I posted on hive, I mentioned pudúes. In a conversation with @jesuspsoto in the comments of that poem, I remembered that I had an old fragment of an unfinished (actually, barely started) juvenile novel that was about pudúes and that, in part, is related to the poem. Since it has a certain independence, although it is no more than a "scene", I am encouraged to publish it here as well.

About six months ago, we were having dinner -dad, mom and I, because Irina was on the computer, chatting with her boyfriend-, when the grandparents rang the doorbell. It was strange for them to come at that hour, unannounced, so the first thing Dad asked them was if something had happened. Grandpa said no, that it was nothing important, but added that he had to talk to mom and dad alone. As we were about to have dessert, mom told me to go to bed, that it was already late, that I had to go to school the next day. She told Irina the same thing.
-I'm coming, Mom, I'm saying goodbye to Rolo.
-Irina, you've been saying goodbye to Rolo since we started eating. Go up to your room if you don't want me to get angry.
-But, Mom, look, you see, I'm saying goodbye.
-I don't want to look, Irina, go up to your room.
Irina turned off the computer without closing anything, as it annoys dad, who says that it breaks the system. She pushed the chair and, without greeting the grandparents, ran up the stairs, went into her room and slammed the door with a tremendous bang that only the grandparents were shocked, because the rest of us were used to it.
I, for my part, hugged the grandparents, gave mom and dad a kiss, and went up the stairs too, but not like Irina, but slowly, without making a sound. I pretended to go into my room, opened and closed the door to throw them off the scent, and stood listening from where they couldn't see me.
-Tell me, Dad, did something happen?
-No, son, don't worry, it's nothing serious. Grandma and I just wanted to tell you something.
-Berta, Nestor, would you like some coffee?
-If you already have it ready, I'll take a cup, dear," said grandma.
-Yes, yes, just heat it up a little. You, Nestor?
-Well, well, if Berta drinks.....
Mom went to the kitchen to prepare the coffee. Grandfather and grandmother sat down on the living room armchairs. Dad also sat down and signaled Grandpa that he was ready to listen to what he had to tell him.
-How are the kids?
-They're fine, Dad. Irina, well, she's a bit impulsive, but it's her age, she's a bit difficult lately. What did you have to tell me?
-Well, you saw that grandma and I went on a trip to the south during the summer.
-In San Martín de los Andes, do you remember, sonny? -Do you remember that we showed you the pictures?
-Yes, mom, I remember, it was a short while ago.
-It's a beautiful city, son, when you have time, when you make some time with your patients, you have to go there, you don't know, the mountains....
-Mom.
-Honey, let me tell him, okay? Well, you know that, in the summer, grandma and I went to the south, to San Martín de los Andes, a beautiful place, you should visit it someday. Besides, we visited other parts of the south, but we stayed mostly in San Martín de los Andes. You know that mom has family there, so we were visiting some distant relatives that we did not even know, very nice people. But, as we were with the van, from time to time we had a little getaway.
Just then, Mom arrived with a tray and four cups of coffee.
-Did I miss anything? -Mom asked Dad.
-No, honey, dad was telling me about the trip to San Martin de los Andes.
-Do you remember, dear, that we showed them the pictures?
-Yes, Berta, I remember, beautiful place.
-Do you know San Martin de los Andes?
Mom was about to say no, that she didn't know it, but Dad looked at Grandma with a face that made them all fall silent.
-Well," said grandpa, "I was telling Huguito about our trip to the south, that we stayed in San Martín de los Andes, but that, from time to time, we took a little trip with the truck to visit other places. We went, for example, to Bariloche, we walked around the lake, we took the boat to Victoria Island, we ate chocolates. We also went...
-Dad, is all that necessary for what you have to tell me?
-Yes, of course, son, it's necessary, you'll see....
-Well, but couldn't you get to the point, tomorrow we have to work, take the kids to school....
-Yes, son, I'm getting to the point. I was telling you that we went to San Martin de los Andes, in the summer, that mom had relatives there and that from time to time we had a little getaway. In one of those little getaways, mom and I went to Lanín National Park, in Neuquén. It is another place you have to visit someday, you don't know what it is, it is beautiful, the nature, the peace there, you breathe clean air, nothing to do with the city.
-Dad, does clean air have anything to do with what you have to tell me?
-No, well, son, I'm putting it in context, you young people always want everything fast.
Mom was getting impatient, she looked at dad out of the corner of her eye, looking for their eyes to cross to signal him to hurry things up. Grandma held Grandpa's hands in hers, caressed him, nodded to everything he said and smiled as if, at that very moment, she were holding Grandpa's hand, walking through the national park, picking flowers or looking at birds' nests.
-We were near the National Park, Grandma and I, alone, walking. We had left the truck on the road and had gone a little way into the grass. We sat down on some rocks and started drinking mate. You saw that grandma cannot be in a place without drinking some mate, so we always carry a thermos with hot water. So we sat down on some rocks, took out the yerba mate, made the mate and we sat there contemplating the landscape, remembering good times, when we were young and went on vacations and we stayed there drinking mate while you played ball or hide and seek.
-Do you remember, sonny, how well you played ball when you were little? The ball was bigger than you, and if you saw how you went back and forth and kicked it, you'd never forget it.
-Mom, dad was telling me something important.
-Yes, dear, let me tell him that the kids have to work tomorrow. We were with mom drinking mate on some stones and contemplating the landscape and remembering. It had been a long time since mom and I had had such a good time in one place. We were delighted. The birds, if you knew how many different kinds of birds there are out there. The blue, blue sky, you don't see those skies here. And those tall trees. Do you know how old those trees are?
-I'm not interested, dad, can you focus on what you have to tell me?
-Yes, son. Don't worry, it's nothing bad. If you want, we'll come back another day when there's more time. I'll keep it short anyway. We were sitting with mom...
-You already said that, dad. They were sitting, drinking mate, contemplating the landscape and reminiscing. You said it about five times.
-Well, don't be like that, son. I'll sum it up for you. We were sitting, mom and I, drinking mate, when we saw two pudúes approaching us. Do you know what a pudú is?
Mom and Dad shook their heads.
-The pudú is the smallest deer in the world. It is from here, from the south of Argentina and Chile. They are at most 90 centimeters long. Imagine a deer that small," said Grandpa as he showed Mom and Dad the size of a pudu with his hands, "and they weigh less than ten kilos. Pudús, they say, shun contact with men, but they must have been used to it, because they walked around in front of us, as if we weren't sitting there, drinking mate and remembering old times. The thing is that mom had the idea of giving them some grass in their mouths. I didn't want to, because after all they are wild animals, irrational, and you don't know how they might react. The irrationality of the animal, you see? But mom insisted and you know that I have an easy yes. So we pulled up a good amount of grass and slowly approached the pudúes, which were looking at us with deer-like eyes, ears pricked up and legs tense. At first it was a little difficult, because when we were about two or three meters away, the pudúes would run away and stare at us again, studying us. We stayed like that for a while, until the pudúes started to lose their fear of us. Each time we got closer, we could almost feel their breathing and see how their deer eyes were losing their fear. At one point, they came closer and began to eat from mom's hands.
-You don't know what a thrill, sonny, how the little deer were eating, and we could pet them as if they were kittens.
Dad covered his mouth with his hand, as if he already imagined what Grandpa wanted to tell him, as if he already knew the question whose answer was what Grandpa wanted to tell him, but he tried to hold it back with the palm of his hand.
-We were feeding them for a while, until it started to get dark. Then, I told grandma that we had to leave, that we had to pack up. We went back to the rocks and the pudúes were following us.
Then Dad ran his hands over his face and could no longer contain himself.
-Dad, what happened to the pudúes? -he asked sighing.
Grandpa looked at Grandma, who lowered her head, as if authorizing Grandpa to answer.
-They are in the truck.
Dad leaned his elbow on the table and covered his eyes. Mom jumped to her feet and started pacing back and forth in the living room, shaking her head repeatedly.
-It's only for a few days, son, they're very good, very good companions.
-Let's see, let's see, wait, Dad, are you asking me to have a deer in my house?
-There are two of them, but they are dwarfs. Really, they are peaceful, but they don't like the apartment, it's too small, they need to run, they would be fine in a big garden like yours.
-Dad, I'm not going to put two deer in the garden.
-Son, it's only for a few days, you know that mom and I want to sell the apartment and move to a big house with native plants....
Dad, they've been wanting to move to a big house for thirty-five years.
-Well, yes, you're right, but what do you want us to do? Let them die?
-No, dad, you can take them to a veterinarian, to the zoo, someone can surely take care of the deer.
-We thought about it, son, don't think not, but we did some research and it is illegal to keep pudúes, because they are in danger of extinction, we can't just show up out of the blue and tell the zoo that we found two pudúes in the street. They would ask us questions and maybe take us to jail or give us a fine.
-Of course, and you want me to take care of two illegal deer in my garden.
-It's just that if you look at it that way it sounds horrible.
-And how do you want me to see it?
-We can do one thing, son. You keep them for a month, just a month, until they get their strength back. After that, mom and I will load them in the truck and take them back to the south and release them in the national park.
-What if you don't take them with you?
-Son, please, I beg you. The neighbor downstairs is suspicious. She hears strange noises, the whole building is starting to talk about it. It's only for a month. I promise.
Dad looked at Mom. He asked her with his eyes what she thought. Then I knew the pudu were going to stay home. That mom was going to look at him with that "no, no way" face and that dad was going to say yes and that they were going to fight and that mom was going to blame him for always agreeing to let the pudúes stay at home.
About ten minutes later, the pudúes were already grazing in the garden, with deer eyes, which were the only ones they had, and standing ears. Grandpa hugged Dad, thanking him infinitely for agreeing to stay with the pudus. Mom stood there, tense, waiting for the grandparents to leave so she could unleash her wild fury. The grandparents then said that it was getting very dark, that the boys had to work the next day, and put on their coats. But, just as they were past the door and Dad was about to close it, Grandpa turned around, as if he had forgotten something.
-Oh, son, one more thing, the female is pregnant.
