Melon 🍈 is very important crop in Africa not of considering Nigeria where it's most valuable and recommended for soup 🍲 cooking. From childhood to the stage I'm in now with five children, my mother and the entire community don't play with the use of melon for soup cooking. When a woman want to get married in Igbo land, the mother will give her a bucket of melon to support her incase if she want to cook soup as she enters her husband's house 🏠. Melon 🍈 is valued in Igbo land most especially when we are celebrating yam festival.
In my village Ehugbo main Afikpo, we use melon to cook native soup 🍲 known as sarara. The melon will be molded in a round shape and then added to pot of soup 🍲 on fire. different tribes in Igbo land uses melon to cook different soup according to their native custom and tradition. Before melon price in the market used to be very cheap because of its consistent usage but now the price is very high as things get tougher. No matter the situation of things, the use of melon 🍈 can't be deprived.
Melon 🍈 planting
Planting of melon is best from the month of April when rain will be raining heavily. From the month of June to July, farmers will be planning to harvesting their melon. I did planted my melon ending March because rain started very early this year.
To plant melon 🍈, cultivate your farm, use a knife or stick to open the soil, and then take two seed of melon and pour inside, then cover with sand or soil.
From four days and above, melon planted is supposed start germinating. When melon start germinating newly, a farmer need to keep an eye to the crop to watch whether squirrel 🐿️ may eat them up.
