Children has this natural gift of decoding things and patiently analyzing whatever it is they have adopted into their heads even in the absence of your own knowledge as an adult, that they had that information been worked on currently and boom you just see them react or talk and all you are left to do is just stare at what just popped out of their mouths.

Scolding a child to me, isn't bad neither is punishment for a bad behavior bad nor rewarding them for been good bad. It only depends on how deep the punishment is depending on the age of the child.
Me as a person, I believe so much in acknowledging people when they have done something good and at the same time, I'll point it out to you when you do it wrong but how I put it matters.

For each of these acts, it stays with the person and in their memories let alone children.
Remember how sad they are in expression and mood when they are punished for doing something bad, same opposite expression of being happy and joyous are always present on their faces when they are applauded or rewarded for doing something good.

What do we call it when it's just the bad side of a child we can only point at to get punished for while we ignore him or her when they eventually do something right? How do they know or reason why being a good child and doing something right is worth it and better off than doing something bad to get punished?
That's exactly the point. The reason why the two upbringing can actually go one-on-one together in grooming a child.

We have the power of choice as humans no matter how little or old we are. So, making choices of being good or bad depends on how we portray the result for each of these to the children.

I believe that the two can go along in upbringing a child of which there's a higher chance of breeding a good child and the absence of one go a long way in making a difference. The absence of punishment will make the child think everything he or she does is right even when it harms or hurt others and the absence of acknowledging when a child does something right will also deprive them of the feelings of how it feels when you do something right.

Parental Discipline shouldn't be about punishment alone but would be perfect when they reward their kids too.
Reward or acknowledge them when they get good grades in school, and not just scolding alone when they get low grades.

For every chores my nephew does on his own without me asking for it to be done, I tell him a sweet "thank you or well-done" which he accepts with a beautiful smile. It prompts him to do better next time, not because I want him to do the chores but to realize that for every actions, there is a reward either good or bad.

In Summary, these two upbringings are so important and compulsory.
Reward according to the deeds being done by the children and not been partial about it.
