Almodovar is arguably the most human director in the industry today, and his latest film, The room next door, is all about that. A film starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton playing incredible roles in what is, for me, one of the director's best films, which brings with it a tranquility and maturity in touching on such interesting subjects as death, friendship and motherhood, that only someone of his age and background could have shown in such a way. Almodovar does it again, and how not, if for those who know him this is not new, but if for some reason you do not know him, let me tell you that the next room is a great way to enter his cinema.
The room next door tells the story of Ingrid, a writer who, upon learning that one of her lifelong best friends, Martha, has cancer, goes to visit her in the hospital and after days of remembering the friendship they had in their youth, Martha asks Ingrid to accompany her in her last days of life because she plans to commit suicide before the cancer kills her. With this decision, the two decide to spend Martha's last days in a rented house, making their friendship much more palpable and enjoyable throughout the film, which, despite dealing with a subject as strong as death, never feels super sentimental or irrelevant to the message it wants to give or the story it wants to tell, which I think is something to be applauded, since not everyone shows the approach to death in the way it sometimes is: real.
Anyone familiar with Almodovar's work knows that his films are synonymous with quality in one way or another, however, if you are not familiar with any of his films, I think this is a good film to get into his cinema because over the years his mise-en-sc猫ne has become calmer, less cluttered and more poetic. This may be counterproductive because it is possibly the least Almodovar film in his filmography, but there are several aspects that have not changed in decades that make his hand very recognizable, and among these characteristics is the personality of the women, which already more than a characteristic is an icon, along with its vibrant colors and unique humor.
Therefore, with a pace that for some people may seem slow, but for me, it is the perfect pace to create a film as introspective as this one is, The room next door is a beautiful film that can also touch the heartstrings of many people, especially if they know someone who has suffered from cancer or a terminal illness. A film that is both a heartfelt embrace for those who have struggled too much, and a comfort for those friends who have been there and supported them throughout their lives. Almodovar es posiblemente el director m谩s humano que hay en la industria hoy en d铆a, y su 煤ltima pel铆cula, la habitaci贸n de al lado, es toda una muestra de eso. Una pel铆cula protagonizada por Julianne Moore y Tilda Swinton haciendo unos papeles incre铆bles en lo que es, para m铆, una de las mejores pel铆culas del director, que trae consigo una tranquilidad y una madurez al tocar temas tan interesantes como lo son la muerte, la amistad y la maternidad, que solo alguien con su edad y su recorrido podr铆a haber mostrado de esa forma. Almodovar lo vuelve hacer, y c贸mo no, si para quien lo conoce esto no es nuevo, pero si por alguna raz贸n no lo conoces, d茅jame te cuento que la habitaci贸n de al lado es una gran forma de entrar a su cine.
La habitaci贸n de al lado nos cuenta la historia de Ingrid, una escritora que al enterarse que una de sus mejores amigas de toda la vida, Martha, tiene c谩ncer, va a visitarla en el hospital y tras d铆as de recordar esa amistad que tuvieron en su juventud, Martha le pide a Ingrid que la acompa帽e en sus 煤ltimos d铆as de vida pues piensa suicidarse antes de que el c谩ncer acabe con ella. Con esta decisi贸n, las dos deciden pasar los 煤ltimos d铆as de Martha en una casa alquilada haciendo as铆 que su amistad se vea mucho m谩s palpable y amena a lo largo de la pel铆cula que, a pesar de tratar un tema tan fuerte como lo es la muerte, nunca llega a sentirse s煤per sentimental o por su contra parte, irrelevante en el mensaje que quiere dar o en la historia que quiere contar, lo que me parece algo digno de aplaudir de pie ya que no cualquier persona muestra el acercamiento a la muerte de la forma en la que a veces suele ser: real.
Quien conozca el trabajo de Almodovar sabe que sus pel铆culas son sin贸nimo de calidad de una u otra manera, sin embargo, si no conoces ninguna de sus pel铆culas, pienso que esta es una buena pel铆cula para entrar en su cine porque con los a帽os su puesta en escena se ha vuelto m谩s tranquila, menos desordenada y m谩s po茅tica. Esto puede ser contraproducente porque es posiblemente la pel铆cula menos Almodovar en su filmograf铆a, pero hay varios aspectos que no han cambiado en d茅cadas que hacen que su mano sea muy reconocible, y entre estas caracter铆sticas est谩 la personalidad de las mujeres, que ya m谩s que una caracter铆stica es un icono, junto con sus colores vibrantes y humor 煤nico.
Por esto, con un ritmo que para algunas personas puede parecer lento, pero para m铆, es el ritmo perfecto para crear una pel铆cula tan introspectiva c贸mo lo es esta, la habitaci贸n de al lado es una pel铆cula hermosa que adem谩s puede tocar la fibra de muchas personas, sobre todo si conocen a alguien que haya padecido de c谩ncer o alguna enfermedad terminal. Una pel铆cula que es, tanto un abrazo al coraz贸n para esas personas que han luchado demasiado, como un consuelo para esos amigos que han estado y han sabido apoyar a lo largo de la vida.
