Who knows me knows that I like coming of age movies, movies where the protagonist goes through situations that make him grow personally. This genre of movies is, the more I think about it, my favorite, because somehow I feel identified with many of the movies like that, and the truth is that's what they are partly for. So the writer or director shows a story that besides being interesting and beautiful, or sometimes horrible and strong, is always, somehow, personal and the more personal, as ironic as it may seem, is also more general. And in these stories we see ourselves reflected in the abuse inflicted by older siblings at some point, in realizing that the life you have is not as bad as you think, in seeing from another perspective that the forms of love you have had in your life, although strange, work.
But as time goes by, even though I love the coming of age, most of them try to show a stage of life that I have already passed: adolescence. A stage that is very important for the life of any person and that, I would say, conditions the way you see the world in your youth and adulthood, but... what about the stages that follow? Being in my mid-twenties, I want to see stories of young people lost in life, young people who are at a point where they want to do everything and at the same time nothing, who have jobs that they hate because it's the only thing they can get and all these kinds of things that I know I can't be the only one who has suffered. Frances Ha is a film very much in this style, and the truth is that I like it a lot, along with the worst person in the world, but there is something in these stories that despite clicking in me does not end up squaring.
After thinking about it for a while, I understood what was missing, and that was geopolitics. It might seem a little silly, but despite having many similarities, the life experience of a person changes depending on the country where he/she is (and despite sounding obvious) this also influences the cinema, as well as its characters and direction. The truth is sometimes not seen because Latin films mostly try to imitate American films to get more fame, but when they don't, Medianeras comes out.
Spending three paragraphs of the post introducing a film sounds counterproductive, but the truth is that this is also how the film feels, and if you think about it, it's not bad, because Medianeras is a film that seeks the importance of the journey and not the destination. Medianeras is an Argentine film about two people in their thirties who are lost in their lives, and that's all. A film that shows the lives of these two people separately with an occasional introspection in between, and honestly, it could have been better. At only an hour and a half long, Medianeras stayed with me for a good while like a hug from a loved one, and I'm glad I saw it now and not before, because at this age it works better for me, and I'm glad I saw it now and not before, because loving Latin America as I do now, it works better for me.
Quien me conoce sabe que me gustan las películas coming of age, películas dónde el protagonista pasa por situaciones que lo hacen crecer personalmente. Este género de películas es, mientras más lo pienso, mi favorito, porque de alguna manera me siento identificado con muchas de las películas así, y la verdad es que para eso son en parte. Así el escritor o el director muestran una historia que además de ser interesante y bella, o a veces horrible y fuerte, siempre, de alguna forma, es personal y mientras más personal, por irónico que parezca, es también más general. Y en estas historias nos vemos reflejados en el abuso que infringieron los hermanos mayores en algún momento, en darte cuenta que la vida que tienes no es tan mala como crees, en ver desde otra perspectiva que las formas de amor que has tenido en tu vida, a pesar de extrañas, funcionan.
Pero con el paso del tiempo, a pesar de que me encantan los coming of age, la mayoría trata de demostrar una etapa de la vida que yo ya pasé: la adolescencia. Una etapa que es de mucha importancia para la vida de cualquier persona y que diría yo, condiciona la forma de ver el mundo ya en tu juventud y en tu adultez, pero..,¿qué pasa con las etapas que le siguen? Al estar a mediados de mis veintes, quiero ver historias de jóvenes perdidos en la vida, jóvenes que estén en un punto dónde quieran hacer de todo y a su vez nada, que tengan trabajos que odien porque es lo único que pueden conseguir y todo este tipo de cosas que la verdad sé que no puedo ser el único que ha sufrido. Frances Ha es una película muy de este estilo, y la verdad es que me gusta mucho, junto con la peor persona del mundo, pero hay algo en estas historias que a pesar de hacer click en mí no termina de cuadrar.
Después de pensarlo un poco, comprendí que era lo que faltaba, y era la geopolítica. Podría parecer un poco tonto, pero a pesar de tener muchas similitudes, la experiencia de vida de una persona cambia dependiendo del país dónde está (y a pesar de sonar obvio) esto influye también tanto en el cine, como en sus personajes y su dirección. La verdad a veces no se ve porque el cine latino en su mayoría trata de imitar al estadounidense para tomar más fama, pero cuando no es así, sale Medianeras.
Pasar tres párrafos del post introduciendo una película suena contraproducente, pero la verdad es que así también se siente la película, y si te pones a pensarlo no está mal, porque Medianeras es una película que busca la importancia del viaje y no del destino. Medianeras es una película argentina sobre dos personas que a sus treintas están perdidos en su vida, y eso es todo. Una película que muestra la vida de estas dos personas por separado con una que otra introspección por en medio, y, sinceramente, podría haber sido mejor. Con una duración de solo hora y media, Medianeras se quedó en mi por un buen rato como un abrazo de un ser querido, y me alegra haberla visto ahora y no antes, porque a esta edad me funciona más, y me alegra haberla visto ahora y no antes, porque amando Latinoamérica como lo hago ahora, me funciona más.
