I'm on vacation and one of the things I like the most is that I can start watching movies like crazy. Because of the holidays I haven't been able to see as many movies as I would like to, plus I feel like I've lost a bit that ability to see several movies in one day (or even just one), however, yesterday I managed to see a movie that I've been wanting to see for a while and that I know will make some noise both in the awards season and maybe in a few weeks when the internet discovers it: Conclave. A film directed by the same person who made All Quiet on the Front Lines, it couldn't be anything but a superb and very interesting piece of work that works flawlessly throughout its entire running time. Why? That's a bit of a difficult question to answer.
Few are the times that while watching a film, I get so immersed in its plot that I can't think of anything to comment on. Rarely do the images in a film seem so well achieved throughout that I find it difficult to think of one shot that is better than another, and yet Conclave manages to do both. The more time I spent with the film the more I was surprised, both by its perfectly measured pace and its images and how it managed to show such an exhaustive process in such a precise way. And that leaves room for the other parts of this Swiss watch, because even though the technical side works incredibly well, which goes beyond the production and its (I say) perfect representation of a conclave, the performances are also to be left with your mouth open throughout the film, being one of those that do not stand out for the ostentation, but for the small gestures and body language.
After the death of the Pope, Cardinal Lawrence is in charge of leading a conclave that, at first glance seems like a quiet election, but as the minutes go by you begin to realize (and the film in turn shows us) how the hunger for power can hurt even those with the greatest faith, turning the conclave into more than a vote, a silent war to see who will be the next Pope. As such, the film is “quiet” for its two hours, but with conversations that are full of double entendres and passive aggressive comments, forcing the actors to function as a kind of villain where you can only be on the side of the “lesser of two evils”.
Conclave is already on the internet, and these quiet days it's good to see a movie with this kind of pace, with a powerful story and that, I'm sure, will be a surprise in the awards season. I really can't recommend it more, as it is not only one of the best films of the year, but also the best performance of Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, which is already saying a lot. And the truth is that since it hasn't hit the internet yet, I mean, tiktok or Instagram, I couldn't find the space to talk about the movie, so I come here to see if anyone has already seen it, and if you haven't, may this post give you the desire and curiosity enough to do so.

Estoy de vacaciones y una de las cosas que más me gusta es que puedo empezar a ver películas como loco. Por las festividades no he podido ver tantas películas como me gustaría, además de que siento que ya perdí un poco esa habilidad de ver varias películas en un día (o incluso solo una), sin embargo, ayer logré ver una película que tenía tiempo queriendo ver y que sé qué hará ruido tanto en la temporada de premios como en tal vez algunas semanas cuando internet la descubra: Conclave. Una película dirigida por la misma persona que hizo sin novedad en el frente, no podía ser más que una obra soberbia y muy interesante que funciona a la perfección durante todo su metraje. ¿Por qué? Es una pregunta un poco difícil de responder.
Pocas son las veces que mientras veo una película, quedo tan inmerso en su trama que se me pasa pensar en algo que comentar. Pocas son las veces que las imágenes de una película me parecen tan bien logradas durante toda la película, que se me hace difícil pensar en un plano que sea mejor que otro, y sin embargo, Conclave logra hacer las dos cosas. Mientras más tiempo pasaba en la película más me sorprendía, tanto por su ritmo perfectamente medido como por sus imágenes y el cómo se logró mostrar un proceso tan exhaustivo de forma tan precisa. Y eso que dejo espacio para las otras partes de este reloj suizo, pues a pesar de que lo técnico funciona increíblemente, lo que va más allá de la producción y su (digo yo) perfecta representación de un conclave, las actuaciones también son para quedar con la boca abierta durante toda la película, siendo de esas que no resaltan por la ostentosidad, sino por los pequeños gestos y el lenguaje corporal.
Tras la muerte del Papa, el cardenal Lawrence es el encargado de dirigir un conclave que, a simple vista parece una elección tranquila, pero con el paso de los minutos empiezas a darte cuenta (y la película a su vez nos muestra) como el hambre de poder puede dañar hasta a los que tienen mayor fe, volviéndose el conclave más que una votación, una guerra silenciosa por ver quién será el próximo Papa. Por eso, la película es “tranquila” durante sus dos horas, pero con conversaciones que están llenas de dobles intenciones y comentarios pasivo agresivos, lo que obliga a los actores a funcionar como una especie de villanos dónde solo puedes estar del lado del “menos malo”.
Conclave ya está en internet, y estos días de tranquilidad es bueno ver una película con este tipo de ritmo, con una historia potente y que, estoy seguro, será una sorpresa en la temporada de premios. Realmente no puedo recomendarla más, ya que no solo es una de las mejores películas del año, sino también la mejor actuación de Ralph Fiennes y Stanley Tucci, que ya eso es decir mucho. Y la verdad es que cómo aún no ha llegado como se debe al internet, quiero decir, a tiktok o a Instagram, no he podido encontrar el espacio para hablar sobre la película, por lo que vengo aquí para ver si alguno ya la vio, y si no lo ha hecho, que este post le dé las ganas y la curiosidad suficiente como para hacerlo.
