Vinegar as Fabric Softener? Does It Work?

Hello, dear friends of #HomeSolutions, today I'm here to tell you another anecdote about my housework. With it, I also take the opportunity to join the initiative that is active in the community about debunking myths, because what I bring you today is my experience with a household trick that I tried some time ago.

As I've mentioned several times before, I'm a person who puts a lot of effort into laundry, both personal laundry and household stuff. It is something I have always paid a lot of attention to, as having a son with atopic skin and suffering from allergies myself, I have to be careful not to use products that leave a lot of scent or residue on the clothes that can cause a reaction.

One of the changes I implemented to help us not to have any problems with our fabrics, was to give the clothes an extra rinse, in order to completely remove any kind of residue or fragrance, so in total I give two rinses to all the laundry cycles I do. However, the most important change I made was to completely eliminate fabric softener, I have to say that this was very hard for me, as I had always used it and felt that certain items needed it, such as towels and sheets. But my son's skin condition was critical, and I couldn't risk doing anything that would make it worse.

So what I did was to start researching a different option that would give me the same results as the fabric softener. I didn't have to look far to find the magic solution for everything: vinegar. How many home tricks don't involve this liquid that seems to work magic in the home? Bearing in mind that vinegar is supposedly good for practically everything, I excitedly added it to my supermarket list and when I had it at home I didn't hesitate to put into practice the trick I had found online, of which of all the versions I found, I selected the one that seemed the most logical in terms of quantities.

The trick, which I don't even remember where it came from because it happened four years ago, consisted of simply adding the vinegar as if it were fabric softener, that is, I had to use the same amount and pour it in the last rinse of the clothes. With great anticipation I went through the simple steps, took my towels out of the washing machine, and hung them in the sun to dry. From the moment I took them out I noticed something that I disliked, the smell of vinegar was horribly strong, however, I had hoped that the air and the sun would neutralise the smell.

That of course didn't happen and as I can't tolerate the smell of vinegar (I hate it) I had no choice but to wash all the towels again. But it didn't stop there, in that second wash I decided to try again with the vinegar, but this time I added it in the first of the two rinses that I normally give to the clothes. This time the smell was not so impregnated in the fabrics and with the air and the sun it went away almost completely, although when I brought the towels close to my face I could still smell it.

Does it work to make the fabrics soft? Honestly, I didn't notice much difference, it worked a little when added in the last rinse, as the towels weren't as rough, but when added in the first rinse I felt it did absolutely nothing but stink up the clothes. The problem is that some time later I read that vinegar should be used with caution, as it can wear out fabrics faster. So even if it works half-heartedly, to tell you the truth, I wouldn't recommend it, simply because the smell it leaves behind is too unpleasant compared to that of fabric softener and soap. That's why I simply continued to use soap for my clothes.

VEREDICT

It works, half-heartedly and with caution. Although, I personally do not recommend it and did not use it any more.

_{PS: yes, after 4 years, I still have the HUGE bottle of vinegar I bought for the trick. Moral of the story: if you are going to try something, buy only enough product for one or two tests in case it doesn't work, or you don't like the result, as was my case.}

¿Vinagre como Suavizante de Telas? ¿Funciona?

Hola, queridos amigos de #HomeSolutions, el día de hoy vengo a contarles una anécdota más de mis andadas en las labores del hogar. Con ella, aprovecho también para unirme a la iniciativa que se encuentra activa en la comunidad sobre desenmascarar mitos, ya que lo que hoy les traigo es mi experiencia con un truco para el hogar que probé hace tiempo.

Como ya he mencionado en varias ocasiones, yo soy una persona que le pone mucho empeño a la lavandería, tanto de la ropa de uso personal, como de las cosas de la casa. Es algo a lo que siempre he puesto bastante atención, ya que al tener un hijo con piel atópica y yo misma sufrir de alergias, debo tener cuidado de no utilizar productos que dejen mucho aroma o residuos en la ropa que puedan ocasionarnos alguna reacción.

Uno de los cambios que implementé para ayudarnos a no tener ningún tipo de problema con nuestros tejidos, fue darle un enjuague extra a la ropa, con la finalidad de retirar por completo cualquier tipo de residuo o fragancia, así que en total le doy dos enjuagues a todos los ciclos de lavandería que hago. Sin embargo, el cambio más importante que hice fue eliminar por completo el suavizante de telas, debo decir que esto me costó muchísimo, ya que siempre lo había usado y sentía que ciertas prendas lo necesitaban, como las toallas y las sábanas. Pero la condición de la piel de mi hijo era crítica y no podía arriesgarme a hacer algo que la empeorara.

Así que lo que hice fue comenzar a investigar alguna opción diferente que me diera los mismos resultados del suavizante. No tuve que buscar mucho para encontrar la solución mágica para todo: vinagre. ¿Cuántos trucos caseros no involucran este líquido que pareciera hacer magia en el hogar? Teniendo presente que supuestamente el vinagre sirve para prácticamente todo, lo agregué emocionada a mi lista del supermercado y cuando lo tuve en casa no dudé en poner en práctica el truco que había encontrado en línea, del cual de todas las versiones que encontré, seleccioné el que me pareció más lógico en cuanto a cantidades.

El truco, que ya ni recuerdo de donde salió porque esto pasó hace cuatro años, consistía en simplemente agregar el vinagre como si fuera suavizante de telas, es decir, debía usar la misma cantidad y echarla en el último enjuague de la ropa. Con mucha expectativa llevé a cabo los sencillos pasos, saqué mis toallas de la lavadora, y las colgué al sol para que se secaran. Desde el momento en el que las saqué noté algo que me desagradó bastante, el olor a vinagre era horriblemente fuerte, no obstante, yo tenía la esperanza de que el aire y el sol neutralizaran el olor.

Eso fue algo que por supuesto no pasó y al no tolerar el olor del vinagre (lo detesto) no me quedó otra opción que lavar nuevamente todas las toallas. Pero la cosa no quedó ahí, en ese segundo lavado decidí volver a intentar con el vinagre, pero esta vez lo agregué en el primer enjuague de los dos que normalmente le doy a la ropa. Esta vez el olor no quedó tan impregnado en los tejidos y con el aire y el sol se fue casi por completo, aunque al acercar las toallas a mi cara yo lo seguía percibiéndolo.

¿Funciona para darle suavidad a los tejidos? Honestamente, yo no noté mucha diferencia, funcionó un poco al agregarlo en el último enjuague, ya que las toallas no quedaron tan ásperas, pero al agregarlo en el primero sentí que no hizo absolutamente nada más que apestar la ropa. El problema es que tiempo después leí que el vinagre debe ser usado con precaución, puesto que puede llegar a desgastar más rápido los tejidos. Por lo que aunque funcione a medias, a decir verdad, yo no lo recomendaría, simple y sencillamente, porque el olor que deja es demasiado desagradable en comparación al del suavizante y al del jabón. Es por ello que simplemente seguí utilizando simplemente jabón para mis prendas.

VEREDICTO

Funciona, a medias y con precaución. Aunque personalmente no lo recomiendo y no lo apliqué más.
