Maintaining order at home with pets can be a challenge, but with proper planning, it's possible to achieve a balance between them and us. This year marks twelve years since I adopted my first two cats, and I can tell you that keeping everything clean and organized at home with them has been a complete challenge. This is especially true because I've raised them as indoor cats their entire lives. This makes keeping everything clean and in its place even more challenging. However, I feel that I have managed quite well, which is why today I want to share some of the strategies I have used to handle this situation.

This is the first and most important point for me. Establishing specific areas for pets is crucial; it could be a bed or a corner with their favorite toys. This helps concentrate their presence in certain parts of the house, making cleaning and organization easier. Since I have more than one pet, I always designate a specific room for their things, usually different from my bedroom, whether it's a room, bathroom, or laundry area.
In that space, they have their litter box, beds, toys, water, and food bowls. This way, they spend most of their time in that space, leaving the rest of the house for occasional forays. This translates to the rest of the house staying almost untouched, and I only have to focus double the attention on that space.
Over time, it's inevitable that we accumulate various items for our pets鈥攂owls, food, toys, accessories like leashes or harnesses, and in the case of cats, litter bags. It's easy to have all these scattered everywhere, but this can create a mess no one wants in their home. What I've chosen to do is reuse old litter boxes and store all their things there. This not only helps maintain order but also ensures their belongings stay in good condition. Another crucial aspect is getting rid of what our pets no longer need, since this only takes up space and contributes to clutter.

One of the reasons I started implementing a cleaning routine at home was precisely because of my cats. It's essential to establish one to achieve our goal of keeping the home clean. In my case, cats shed a lot of fur, so I have to sweep and dust daily. Additionally, within my week, I include vacuuming at least once, mopping at least three times, and washing sofa protectors once a week (or more, depending on activity and season).
This is something that must be done consistently to eliminate fur, stains, and odors. That's why it's easiest to create a functional cleaning routine that adapts to our daily lives, but most importantly, it considers everything we need to do to avoid forgetting tasks and distributes cleaning to prevent a buildup of work at home that might discourage us from doing it.
It is of utmost importance to see our pets as living beings with needs just like us. What do I mean by this? They also require interaction and attention. A stressed, anxious, or upset pet creates much more disorder and mischief than a calm and happy one. This is achieved by satisfying both their need for attention and affection, as well as their physical needs. We must provide them with a suitable space to go to the bathroom. In the case of dogs, address their energy expenditure needs by taking them for walks and playing. Dedicate time to them; this helps them be calmer at home and prevents disorder.
Moreover, having suitable toys for their size helps them focus their attention on those objects and not on what they shouldn't touch. In the case of cats, it is also necessary to provide them with the toys and entertainment they require. In my home, I have a scratching post for them and some boxes for them to scratch, play, and hide. When they were younger, they also had balls, but over time (and age), they stopped playing with them. So, I only maintain the scratching post and something they always have鈥攂oxes to destroy and play with. Although boxes may seem like a double-edged sword since they break and generate trash that needs cleaning, they keep them entertained and away from other important things they might break, throw, or disorder. The idea with this point is, like the first one, to allow them to focus their attention on things other than creating chaos or causing disorder at home.
These four points have been fundamental in maintaining order and cleanliness in my home. As I mentioned at the beginning, it hasn't been an easy task, as I had four cats for a long time. However, it is possible with consistency and planning.
Mantener el orden en casa con mascotas puede ser un desaf铆o, pero con la planificaci贸n adecuada, es posible lograr un balance entre ellos y nosotros. Este a帽o cumpl铆 doce a帽os desde que adopt茅 a mis primeros dos gatos y les puedo decir que ha sido un completo desaf铆o mantener todo limpio y ordenado en casa con ellos, sobre todo porque toda su vida los he criado como gatos de interior, es decir, siempre est谩n dentro de casa. Esto hace a煤n m谩s desafiante el mantener todo limpio y en su lugar, sin embargo, siento que lo he logrado bastante bien, es por ello que el d铆a de hoy quiero compartirles algunas de las estrategias que he usado para manejar esta situaci贸n.
Este es el primer punto y el m谩s importante para m铆. Establecer 谩reas espec铆ficas para las mascotas es fundamental, puede ser una cama o un rinc贸n con sus juguetes preferidos. Esto ayuda a concentrar su presencia en ciertas partes de la casa, facilitando la limpieza y el orden. Yo como tengo m谩s de una mascota, siempre designo una habitaci贸n espec铆fica para sus cosas, normalmente es una diferente a mi dormitorio, bien sea un cuarto, ba帽o o 谩rea de lavander铆a.
En ese espacio tienen su arenero, camas, juguetes, los platos del agua y de la comida. De esta manera, ellos pasan la mayor parte del tiempo en ese espacio, dejando el resto de la casa para algunas incursiones ocasionales, lo cual se traduce en que el resto de la casa se mantiene casi intacta y debo concentrar el doble de mi atenci贸n en solo ese espacio.
Con el tiempo es inevitable que nos llenemos de cositas de nuestras mascotas, sus platos, comida, juguetes, accesorios como correas o arneses, y en el caso de los gatos, las bolsas de arena. Es f谩cil tener todo esto regado por todos lados, sin embargo, esto puede generar un desorden que nadie quiere en su hogar. Lo que yo he optado por hacer es reutilizar cajas viejas de arena y all铆 almaceno todas sus cosas, esto no solo ayuda a mantener el orden, sino que tambi茅n ayuda a que se conserven en buen estado. Otra cosa muy importante en este aspecto es deshacerse de lo que ya no necesitan nuestras mascotas, ya que esto solo ocupa espacio y favorece el desorden.

Una de las razones por las que comenc茅 a implementar una rutina de limpieza en casa fue precisamente por mis gatos. Es importante establecer una para poder lograr nuestro objetivo de mantener limpio el hogar. En mi caso, los gatos son mascotas que dejan muchos pelitos, es por ello que diariamente debo barrer y sacudir. Adem谩s, dentro de mi semana incluyo pasar la aspiradora por lo menos una vez, trapear al menos tres veces y lavar los protectores de los sillones una vez a la semana (o antes, dependiendo de la actividad y de la 茅poca).
Esto es algo que se debe hacer de manera constante para eliminar el pelo, las manchas y los olores, es por ello que lo m谩s sencillo es armar una rutina de limpieza que sea funcional, que se adapte a nuestro d铆a a d铆a, pero sobre todo que contemple todo lo que debemos hacer para evitar olvidos y distribuir la limpieza para evitar acumulaci贸n de trabajo en casa que nos haga desistir de realizarla.
Es de suma importancia que veamos a nuestras mascotas como un ser vivo que tiene necesidades al igual que nosotros. 驴Qu茅 quiero decir con esto?, ellos tambi茅n necesitan interacci贸n y atenci贸n, una mascota estresada, ansiosa o molesta genera mucho m谩s desorden y hace m谩s travesuras que una tranquila y feliz. Esto se logra satisfaciendo tanto sus necesidades de atenci贸n y afecto, como las f铆sicas. Debemos proporcionarle un espacio adecuado para que vayan al ba帽o, en el caso de los perros atender sus necesidades de gasto de energ铆a, sac谩ndolos a pasear y a jugar, dedicarles este tiempo ayuda a que cuando est茅n en casa est茅n m谩s tranquilos y no causen desorden. Por otra parte, tenerles juguetes adecuados para su tama帽o ayuda a que concentren su atenci贸n en esos objetos y no en lo que no deben agarrar.
En el caso de los gatos tambi茅n es necesario proporcionarles los juguetes y el entretenimiento necesario para que no busquen otra cosa con que satisfacerlo. En casa a los m铆os les tengo un rascador y algunas cajas para que rasquen jueguen y se escondan, cuando eran m谩s peque帽os tambi茅n ten铆an pelotas, pero con el tiempo (y la edad) han dejado de jugar con ellas, as铆 que solamente mantengo el rascador y algo que siempre tienen son cajas para destruir y jugar. Aunque las cajas puedan parecer un arma de doble filo, ya que las rompen y generan basura que hay que limpiar, estas los mantienen entretenidos y lejos de otras cosas importantes que pueden romper, tirar o desordenar. La idea con este punto es que, al igual que el primero, les permitamos concentrar su atenci贸n en otras cosas que no sea en hacer desastres o en ocasionar desorden en casa.
Estos cuatro puntos han sido fundamentales para mantener el orden y la limpieza en mi hogar. Como coment茅 al principio, no ha sido tarea f谩cil, ya que durante mucho tiempo tuve cuatro gatos, sin embargo, es posible hacerlo, con constancia y planificaci贸n.
