You’re a New York teenager who lost her mother in an unsolved murder; you become so obsessed with the case that, in your search for answers, you break the law. Your extreme rebelliousness leads your father to send you to what is supposedly an academy in New Orleans for troubled young women, but it turns out it’s not just any school—it’s a school for witches.
Coven Academy
I think the opening lines already say a lot about what we can expect from this Disney series, which—even though it’s aimed at a teenage audience—can also be enjoyed by adults.
The series centers on Briar, a young woman from New York who didn’t know her mother was a witch and who suddenly arrives at an academy that looks terrible on the outside but turns out to be a school for witches. There, she discovers part of her mother’s past and learns that she herself is a powerful witch, but that to fully master her powers, she must train and form a coven with two other girls, with the goal of protecting the world from vampires and other supernatural evils.
Now, this series shows us that each witch has a specific power; for example, Tegan manipulates time, Sasha can read emotions and also possesses mind control and influence over others, and Briar uses telekinesis. Thus, we see that this young woman’s arrival at the academy brings to light situations from the past that haven’t been fully resolved.
Something that caught my attention is the beauty of the three girls; each one, in her own way, is very beautiful. For example, Briar’s huge blue eyes contrast with her black hair, and the way she’s dressed and styled makes her look rebellious and unconventional. Tegan, a sweet, tender, and very understanding blonde, always seeks reconciliation and supports those around her, and Sasha is a stunning young woman of African descent with beautiful facial features, who is coping with the loss of a family member.
As for the costumes, I loved the way the girls are dressed and styled, especially the uniforms, since the rules aren’t rigid; as long as the fabric is plaid, it’s acceptable—they can wear skirts, shorts, vests, and more. As for the music, since it’s a 2026 series, the music is contemporary and fits every situation that arises.
As for episode length, they’re very short; for example, for those of us used to watching series with episodes lasting an hour or close to it, here we have short episodes of about 20 minutes, which means the first season’s 21 episodes can be watched in no time.
I was struck by the presence of Tiffani Thiessen in the cast, who in her youth was part of the cast of the famous ’90s series Saved by the Bell; here, she plays the academy’s director, who, apparently, harbors many secrets and only offers answers—often half-hearted ones—when she has no other choice.
So, in search of answers, Briar gradually uncovers more about her mother’s past and grows closer to her sisters; at the same time, mysteries and enemies emerge, and—naturally, since it’s a teen series—there’s no shortage of teenage romance and romantic entanglements, such as falling for someone you’re supposed to avoid or destroy, or love triangles.
As for what I didn’t like, it was Briar’s sometimes senseless rebelliousness—disregarding rules and going against even her own safety—as well as the fact that they eliminated one of the antagonists without making the most of his role.
In conclusion, Coven Academy is a series aimed at a teenage audience, but it can be enjoyed by adults as well, because it has interesting premises and offers a break from deeper, more elaborate storylines; I give it a 65/100.
