The village girls who fell in love with the wrong boy were sent to Caracas.

Carmen was about 15 years old, and deeply loved Archimedes, her neighbor; she dreamed of being his wife and bearing many children, but her father had told her that she could be with anyone, except a fisherman; and Archimedes, as well as his brothers, and his father, were fishermen.

When I arrived in Caracas to live with my aunt, Carmen was already there, she had a daughter, almost my age, who played with me and we grew up together as brothers. Maybe that's why Carmen loved me very much, because her daughter Betty and I got along well.

Children find out about things when grown-ups think that one is not listening, but I always had my ear up, so I knew that Betty was the daughter of a cousin of mine who never took responsibility for her, and that Carmen had got pregnant to see if she forgot a boyfriend she had left in Carúpano.

Carmen studied nursing in Caracas, and worked in a hospital until she retired, but she continued to do night shifts as a substitute. Her life was spent taking care of Betty, doing the housework, and working nights at the hospital.

On one occasion, she said that this was the last week she would work, because Betty was already big and she preferred to stay at home to help her with her homework.

That night she told his partner on duty that he would not go anymore; it was a normal night, just a recently operated child who was very calm.

She collected her belongings in a small box, and was heading to the exit, when she heard that someone called her:

-Carmen -Wait a moment -said a co-worker.

-What is it, sis’? Carmen said surprised.

"I need you to help me do a charity," she said with a very sad face.

-Tell me what it is about? Carmen asked, surprised.

-Here there is a patient, who has been on the floor for about 15 days, is dying, it seems that he has no one, and asks that they accompany him to pray something before he dies, I am not of his religion, I know that you are Catholic and it hurts me that he dies without fulfilling his last wish.

Carmen approached the bed carefully, looked at him gently, said: "Good evening, I am Carmen, and I came to pray with you."

When Carmen began to pray, the man had his eyes closed, but he opened them little by little as if her voice revived him.

She sensed that he was uncomfortable, adjusted the bed for him so that it was a little more inclined, and arranged the pillow behind his head.

At that moment, when she was very close to him and their eyes met, it was when she recognized him:

-Archimedes! Carmen said crying.

He couldn't say a word; he just squeezed her hand and died smiling.

Carmen told me alone about it, crying "fate wanted him to die in my arms."

I was about twelve years old; I remember that at that moment I thought about writing my first story.
