“You always blame circumstances for being the way you are. I do not believe in circumstances. Those who advance in the world, go in search of the circumstances that they want and if they do not find them, they create them for themselves." George Bernard Shaw

Although it must be accepted that on many occasions it is impossible to create your own – as such – circumstances, in general, I agree with Mr. Bernard Shaw. Take it from someone who was born and lived his childhood in one of Monterrey's most traditional, colorful, and at the same time tough neighborhoods. In every city, there is one of them and although typically the opportunities to make your way in life within them are not abundant, they are not non-existent either.

In them daily many people row against the current and manage to overcome unimaginable obstacles and achieve success. Yes, it is true, success is relative and also subjective. For now, I will limit myself to saying that there are people who, not having much, eventually reach many achievements. At the same time, there are people who, even having everything on a silver platter, cannot get ahead in life.

Some common examples would be students who blame their teachers/professors for their poor grades, people who are stuck in a tedious profession/job where they cannot put their talents into practice because they are afraid of change, people who say that the lack of money and/or the "right" connections prevent them from starting their dream business when in a marriage, one spouse blames his counterpart that the flame of love has gone out or that the children have gone astray and how to forget our public servants. It's very clear that it's because of them that we can't prosper, right?

Can you identify with one/several of these statements? Do they sound – essentially – familiar to you? Although we could argue that there is some truth in each of them, I say that the main problem is another. What are your obstacles and/or excuses? What differentiates those who conquer from those who are conquered? The list is long, but I believe that conformity, lack of initiative, and lack of faith are at the top of that list.

¿Se puede hacer algo al respecto? ¡Si!

Can you do something about it? Yes! You came into this life endowed with talents, temperament, learning ability, nationality, family, friends, a certain amount of material possessions, etc. All these things are tools – a figure of speech – that give you some potential to improve your life and the world in which you live. But having the potential is useless if you don't dare to change the circumstances. Remember that it is not about what you have but about who you are.

My tips for daring to unleash your potential are: 1. Identify your values - what is valuable to you 2. Identify a goal that you would like to achieve within the next three months 3. Identify your gifts, talents, abilities, and resources 4. Talk about your goal with someone you trust

In the near future I will continue to expand on the subject. If you have questions or comments - write them in the comments section
