I'm back home after spending nearly five days away. I left my town on Thursday evening and arrived in Timisoara after a three-hour drive. The roads in Romania can get congested since we don't have many highways, but there are some places that are worth the hassle.
Timisoara is the city where my grandma came from, the place where my sister was born, and where both of us graduated from college. It is one of the largest cities in Romania, and to be honest, it has changed a lot since my college days.
At first, I had some difficulties recognizing certain places that used to be familiar to me, but after a couple of days, it all started to make sense.

This particular area of the city is renowned for the events that unfolded during the 1989 revolution, which was actually a coup d'état, as citizens revolted against the communist regime.
Some of the old buildings in the downtown area have been renovated, while others remain untouched. There are plenty of restaurants with steep prices, and I must say that the city has a vibrant, touristic atmosphere on hot summer evenings.
The architecture here is so distinct compared to what you can find in my area, and there's a reason for that. The Western influence of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire has not only shaped the buildings but also the character of the people.
