Who doesn't love a Monkey Puzzle!
It made crazy heavy snow in Ireland about a month or so ago - it was the most snow we got in 30+ years. I remember taking these photos at the time, and thinking, hey I should stick these up on Steemit...
Then I completely forgot as I tend to do sometimes!!
So here you go..
A birthday Present
I actually received the tree as a gift from my wife last year. Such a cool present, I loved it, and cant wait until it grows into a large tree in years to come. I just love these trees for some reason. I'm not sure what it is, maybe it is the symmetry. I do love a bit of symmetry :o)
Where did the get their name from
Apparently the name for this tree "monkey puzzle" was first coined in Britain in the 1850s, or so Wiki tells me anyway :o) A fellow by the name Sir William Molesworth was one of the first owners of such a tree, and was showing it off to some friends one day. One of them remarked, "It would puzzle a monkey to climb that". As the species had no existing popular name, the name stuck, and so Araucaria araucana are now known the world over as Monkey puzzles.
It Rolls of the tongue ever so easier than Araucaria araucana ;o)
What I hope my tree looks like in years to come
The following photos are not mine, and the source can be found under each one. I just wanted to show you what I am hoping mine grows up to look like :o)
