Fleeing the winter wasteland (that's what it felt like at the time anyway) of Canada in January 2008. Snowy roads aren't so bad, it's the ice you have to watch out for.
There have been a few times I've driven up to Canada (from Florida) around Christmas or New Year's. The roads aren't always great but once you get so far north, they are generally good about plowing them. Once, I followed a snow plow for almost an hour.
