Situated right next to the French border is Saarbrücken, the capital and largest city of the German state of Saarland. Created in 1909 by the merger of three towns, Saarbrücken, St. Johann, and Malstatt-Burbach, it is Saarland's administrative, commercial and cultural center.
Direkt an der französischen Grenze liegt Saarbrücken, die Hauptstadt und größte Stadt des Saarlandes. Es entstand 1909 durch den Zusammenschluss der drei Städte Saarbrücken, St. Johann und Malstatt-Burbach und ist das administrative, wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Zentrum des Saarlandes.

„Saarbrücken“ literally translates to „Saar bridges“. Sure, there are a number of bridges around, but not that many – and the name actually predates the oldest bridge in the historic center of Saarbrücken by a few hundred years.
We're pretty clear on the first part of the name, „Saar“, which originates from the Celtic word „sara“ (streaming water), and the Roman name of the river, „Saravus“.
Klar, man kann „Saarbrücken“ wörtlich nehmen: Es gibt eine ganze Anzahl von Brücken, aber nicht sooo viele – und vor allem ist der Name ein paar hundert Jahre älter als die älteste Brücke in der Saarbrücker Altstadt!
Man ist sich über den ersten Teil des Namens einig, nämlich, dass er vom keltischen Wort „Sara“ (strömendes Wasser) abgeleitet ist. Dass die Römer des Fluss als „Saravus“ bezeichneten, ist ebenfalls unstrittig.
Since the second portion of the name is not about bridges, the prevailing theory declares it of Celtic origin as well, i.e. the ancient word „briga“ (hill or rock) is supposed to denote the large hill from which the castle of Saarbrücken is overlooking the river Saar. The castle – or château – is a museum today, and a prominent feature in the cityscape.
Da es im zweiten Teil des Namens wohl nicht um Brücken geht, erklärt die vorherrschende Theorie auch ihn keltischen Ursprungs. Das Wort „briga“ (Hügel oder Felsen) soll den großen Hügel bezeichnen, von dem aus eine Burg – das Saarbrücker Schloss – die Saar überblickt. Das Schloss ist heute ein Museum und ein markantes Element im Stadtbild.
Saarbrücken is well worth a visit, especially in combination with nearby Metz (Lorraine, France) and Luxembourg. Of course, from the air we can only get a quite narrow impression of what the town is all about. I'll tell you about individual attractions in future posts.
